Samsung introduces 2TB SSD hard drives

Samsung Electronics has just launched a pair of new solid state drive (SSD) hard drives, each featuring a whopping storage capacity of 2 terabytes. The 2TB SSD 850 PRO and 850 EVO models feature Samsung's Vertical NAND flash chips, and are among the largest storage options now available in retail SSDs. Samsung says the new drives will be available in 50 countries, however exact pricing wasn't revealed.

The 850 SSD PRO and EVO drives have the same aluminum case as Samsung's previous models, measuring 2.5-inches wide and only 7mm thick. Inside are 128 of the company's individual 32-layer 128Gb 3D V-NAND flash chips, offering a significant amount of storage in a very small package. In addition, speed and power efficiency are maintained thanks to four 20nm-class 4Gb LPDDR3 DRAM chips.

While the new SSDs are aimed at both professionals and consumers, Samsung says the difference in computing speed can really be noticed when working with extra large content types, such as editing and viewing ultra HD 4K video footage.

The 2TB 850 PRO is guaranteed by Samsung for up to 10 years or 300 terabytes written, while the 2TB 850 EVO is guaranteed for up to 5 years or 150 terabytes written. In addition, the company says it will soon expand its high-capacity SSD lineup to mSATA and M.2 form factors for gaming PCs and laptops.
