Samsung holding Galaxy S II event August 29: Launch ahoy!

Looks like Samsung is finally ramping up to bring the Galaxy S II to the US, with the company sending out invites this morning for a New York City event on Monday, August 29 2011. Bearing the distinctive "II" logo we've already seen on the GSII, the invitation suggests that Samsung Mobile has "a major product announcement" to make.

Although the Galaxy S II has already been on sale in Europe and Asia, setting sales records for Samsung and impressing reviewers – ourselves included – the dual-core smartphone is yet to make its official debut in the US. A sign-up page for more information went live at the end of July, and we've heard various rumors about potential carrier-customized iterations of the smartphone, but until now Samsung has been relatively quiet about timescales for the Android handset's launch.

That all looks to be changing, however, and about time too. Even several months after its launch, the Galaxy S II still holds its own on the spec sheet: the display may be WVGA rather than qHD, but it's a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus panel of Samsung's own creation and delivers excellent visuals, while the slimline 8.49mm chassis and Full HD capable 8-megapixel camera add up to a solid flagship.

SlashGear will be bringing you all the details from the launch event on August 29, where Samsung will hopefully tell us when, exactly, we'll be able to pick up a Galaxy S II and on which carriers. If you're in the UK, meanwhile, there's still time to enter our Vodafone Galaxy S II giveaway!
