on the phone level, any newcomer will face the ecosystem problem (namely a chicken and egg issue). On the tablet, all the current operating systems are sub par quality wise, i can only see a big push by Ubuntu as a viable solution, providing a fully fledged OS.

webOS, W8Phone, FirefoxOS, Ubuntu, Tizen, etc, etc….
Different strokes, they say, but from a market perspective the only viable OSs are Android, iOS and BB10 (no matter how much money Microsoft throws at their failures). If one new OS could be considered a challenger it would likely be the open source FirefoxOS if it allows manufacturers to avoid Android’s “Microsoft Tax”, isn’t tied to another manufacturer like webOS or Tizen and doesn’t relying on hobbyists participation like Ubuntu.
