Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 To Be Thicker Than iPad 2 Due To Supply Shortage?

Although Samsung and Apple are business partners when it comes to Apple's components, their recent legal battle has only fueled the already fierce competition in smartphones and tablets. When Apple first unveiled their slimmed down iPad 2 that measured only 8.8mm thin, Samsung went back to the drawing board and cut down their Galaxy Tab 10.1 to only 8.6mm thin. But now there are reports that due to some components supply shortages may force Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 to end up being thicker than the iPad 2.

The problem in supply comes from the shortage in a specific type of display. Samsung has been using a thin GFI display for their Galaxy Tab 10.1 to cut down on the thickness. The shortage may force them to use another type of display panel that's 40 percent thicker and even has 40 percent lower light transmission. However, there may be other issues with the Galaxy Tab 10.1 display that are more important to take care of than whether or not it's a hair thicker.

Samsung had just recently pushed out its first Galaxy Tab 10.1 commercial on Youtube that poke fun at the fact that Apple doesn't support Flash. The two companies are still embroiled in a legal battle with Apple accusing Samsung of copying iPhone and iPad designs and Samsung counter-suing with its own patent infringements. Most recently, Samsung has demanded to see early iPhone 5 and iPad 3 prototypes in response to Apple's winning early access to Samsung's upcoming smartphones and tablets.
