Dear Samsung,

it is not surprising that you (the company being complained about most here) would agree with that grammatically challenged airhead "roy(whatevers)". I think you both attended the same elemenatary school English Grammar class (or failed to attend as the case may be).

With a corporate attitude like you have, it will not be surprising when a new more user friendly phone maker puts you out of business.

On the other hand, it was touching (and possibly romantic) that you signed your name at the end "Love Samsung". Though there should have been a comma between "Love" and "Samsung", everyone, I'm sure, understood your feelings for each other. I hope the two of you have a very happy life together. But please do the world a favor and don't reproduce!

Love,

roy(whatevers).

You sir are an IDIOT of the first order of idiots. In the first place it is quite obvious that it is YOU who are the NERD. And not in any positive sense, if there is one. The convoluted methods you speak of in order for one to get a simple software update shows how little you know about technology and the concept of "user friendliness" that is necessary to get the vast majority of people to use technology.

If people like you had had their way, we would still be cranking our cars from the front instead of using a simple (and user friendly) key and starter arrangement. And computers would still use punchcards. You are a throwback (even if you are a young nerdy "know-nothing"). Your kind holds everyone else back from the greater convenience of the future, brought about by people like me who refuse to accept low tech that requires a lot of molly-coddling and fussing around with.

My wish, and everyone else here who has more than half a brain, is for OTA update and no-hard reset/data loss during the procedure. Android (and Palm and all the others) should have (and could have) been that way from the very start--else they shouldn't have started (released their first versions) till they had it built in to the OS already (and forced it onto all device manufacturers).

I agree those who WANT to futz around with a computer should be able to do so (one reason I don't have a Mac). But user friendliness is paramount and a "condition for entry" into the tech world. If a company can't (or won't satisfy that need, then they are not serious and should stay OUT of any tech endeavor. You will see what I mean in 20 or 30 years when all software is turnkey simple to use, totally stable, utterly secure and does exactly what it says with no glitchiness whatsoever. It WILL happen, whether you believe in it or not, and whether you support it or not. The car started out as user unfriendly and fussy and unreliable as the computer still is (in these early personal computer days), but the car matured and so will the computer. But it will be NO THANKS to backwards people who don't believe it can or should happen.

Android (and Palm and all the others) should have (and could have) been that way from the very start–else they shouldn’t have started (released their first versions) till they had it built in to the OS already (and forced it onto all device manufacturers).

I agree those who WANT to futz around with a computer should be able to do so (one reason I don’t have a Mac). But user friendliness is paramount and a “condition for entry” into the tech world. If a company can’t (or won’t satisfy that need, then they are not serious and should stay OUT of any tech endeavor. But it will be NO THANKS to backwards people who don’t believe it can or should happen.

Amen!!! I was told by several Sprint Tech Support as well as store reps that the Moment was updateable via the web. On that basis I purchased it. I didn't find out for a year about the different flavors of proprietary vs Google Experience phones, and I keep my ear to the tech ground very well. The carriers all seem to think that as long as there is SOME way to get the update, that they are all equivalent. That is a pathetic and ridiculous notion! They say NOTHING about having to use another computer to update the "smartphone computer" (yes I consider the smartphone to be a computer in it's own right). And they say nothing about losing all your data (hard resetting) during the update (or backing it up some complicated way). I was explicitly told that all Android phones had an update feature like Windows does, and that it was as simple as that. A year later I found out that was a lie and that only Google Experience phones had that absolutely essential feature (and presumably they do--I hope). What a bunch of idiots at Google and the handset makers and carriers--a perfect 3way f-kfest of technical stupidity!

It is as stupid to require a person to have (and use) another ($2000) computer to update a ($200) smartphone and lose ones data in the bargain as it would be for GM to design their $20,000 cars to require you to purchase a $200,000 Ferrari just to suck the old oil out of the GM engine and blow new UPDATED oil into it. And then to have the car "hard reset" it's contents by spontaneously opening all the doors and the trunk and blowing ALL your belongings over into the river!!! With the ONLY alternative to "belongings loss" (like "data loss") being for the (now infuriated) customer to remove all the belongings from the GM car and strap it to the roof of the $200,000 Ferrari. And then put it in a giant Mixmaster and use the power of the Ferrari to blow it back inside the GM car when they are finished using the "power of the Ferrari to change the Chevys oil. STUPID! INCREDIBLY STUPID PEOPLE!!

OOOHH--BUUTT if you get the SPECIAL version of the GM car, called a General Motors Experience car, you can just push a simple button and the oil will change ITSELF with NO hassles and NO hard resetting of your data/belongings. But guess what--if the dealer you buy from doesn't sell a "General Motors Experience" car, or if it isn't the kind you want, your only choice is to go buy another car from Ferrari that costs 10x more, just to "update the oil" in the GM car. Plus that oil update procedure is complex, confusing, time consuming, intimidating to even think about.

As a direct result, I now have an aging and slowly failing Moment stuck permanently on Android 1.5 . The browser is corrupted and hasn't worked for months and can't be uncorrupted without losing my data. And there is absolutely nothing I can do about it. I have a $3000 laptop that could be used for this, but I refuse to jump through Googles difficult and ridiculous hoops. I WON'T learn how to use one computer to update another one, because there is NO reason I should have to and also it is too difficult. I don't know who to be angry at the most--Google (for designing stupidity into an OS), Samsung (for accepting and expressing stupidity in a non-selfupdating phone) or Sprint (for being misinformed or possibly lying to me). IF I get another Android (a BIG if) it will definitely have to be a Google Experience phone (regardless of any other consideration), or else Google will have to have gotten it's head out of it's ass enough to extend the auto updating (and NO hard resetting of data) to ALL of the Android versions from now on.

I WILL NOT BUY another Android that doesn't have an update experience that is at least as easy as Microsofts. If Google can't at least bring their update game up to Microsofts buggy standard for updating, then they are not going to make it in the long term.

One more analogy for your amusement if you don't mind--updating a computer with a USB cord or sd card instead of directly via the internet like Windows and every other damn bit of software under the sun (including the Market aps for Chrissakes!!) is like NOT letting your DOG eat the normal way he SHOULD--i.e. via his mouth and throat. But INSTEAD like sewing his mouth SHUT! and feeding his stomach through his ASS--with loong hose. A USB hose!! If Google has an OUNCE of brains or more, it WILL immediately make all upcoming versions of Android update the NORMAL way--via the air, with a BIG, FAT, UPDATE ICON ON THE MAIN SCREEN--WITH AN AUTOMATIC UPDATE OPTION. ALL versions of phones--NOT JUST Google Experience!!! If they can't (or THINK they can't) make that happen on the more proprietary (Samsung etc) phones--then they just need to fold up tent and quit now and NOT WASTE OUR TIME by pretending they know anything about OS design.

OTA updating IS a BASIC!! NOT an option, not a "choice"--and NOT a minor thing to users. We ASSUME it is there--and we have a RIGHT to expect it to BE there on EVERY Android phone (NO exceptions) and that it will work right and that we WON'T lose our data.

Lets get on Google to make them UNDERSTAND these facts people--PLEASE!!!

Thank You for your time.

That's a horrible way to buy new technology. Smartphones are evolving so fast, a consumer absolutely has to think about the future. Simply buying a phone that works NOW is about the most stupid approach. I pay attention to manufacturer and carrier trends, I watch new and upcoming technologies, and when I make a purchase I make sure it's a phone that will not only be useful NOW, but as far into the future as possible.

I have a friend that hates android because she bought some cheap LG Ally phone from Verizon (against my advice :P). Underpowered, small and weak; outdated the day it hit the shelves. The way you're describing phone buying is the exact reason millions of people are going to buy an iphone even though it's outdated hardware.

If you're not willing to make sure your smartphone can handle not only what's cool now, but a year or two in the future, you shouldn't be shopping for a smartphone at all.

why cant manufacturers just use vanila android, so they dont need to develop ages to get it running on their phones.. i absolutely dislike selfmade UI anyway they WONT NEVER RUN just as fast as the native ones

I can understand peoples frustration with the whole firmware update process or rather the lack of it from Samsung.

However, if your're here posting a comment, then that means you're computer literate, maybe not a computer engineer but you have a clue that doing a simple search on GOOGLE for XDA Developers website you will find the latest and greatest for the Galaxy S and other smartphones.

So don't be lazy and just do a little research like the rest of us and you'll find all the latest firmwares. And stop the pathetic comments about not buying anything from Samsung anymore etc, and grow up.

All I want from Samsung is to keep inovating and pushing forward in terms of hardware, and by the looks of it, they're doing just that. Software wise, i'll look to XDAdevelopers, because those guys are geniuses when it comes to that.

Cheers

The galaxy COULD be great phone
IF it had at least 2.2 and the GPS would work
My Old G1 was a better phone for navigation ...
Also No Skype because we are stuck at 2.1
And the sold how many ? 1 Mio +?
Great marketing and really dumb consumers ( including myself)
So why would I repeat the experience and buy another Samsung phone?

Two questions need to be answered by Samsung, One does the damn GPS work on this upcoming line? Second will it come with your TRASH touch wiz or will it be stock android?
Here is some suggestions from the consumer, which isn't happy with Samsung. Start with upgrading of the phone for future os that more than likely Google will push out a new one or two in 2011. I would like Samsung to pick one U.S. carrier and lanuch the phone or what you release shouldn't change when it comes to the U.S. ( DON'T CHANGE THE DAMN PHONE !!) Other than that Samsung you make a great product, Super Amoled screen but GPS won't lock? Come on get your act together Samsung!

Yeah, I think if the phone manufacturer cannot guarantee and deliver on an upgrade then consumers should avoid the brand like the plague, even though in my case I'll always root my device ASAP, but I understand a lot of people have their reservations about rooting. Samsung has simply been incredibly irresponsible and I don't blame the people who decide to boycott or call for a boycott.
If you treat your consumers like dirt, then they have every justification to avoid you like dirt

I understand your frustration and I agree Samsung has been grossly irresponsible (they just pushed out the update yesterday), but you know rooting and placing a custom ROM is an option.
Despite Samsung's irresponsibility if they continue to put out topnotch hard ware I'll have to buy their product. I'll just have to root so I can get the latest updates.
I think what would be most helpful is if Android users will speak very loudly against skinning of the OS by the manufacturers then we can all get pure Google experience and the issue of upgrades will be no more.

I don't know what everyone is complaining about. I've had 2.2.1 for ages now and my daughters galaxy s only have just recieved 2.2 but rather than waiting for her provider to submit the same version than me i just downloaded the same firmware as mine along with odin and flashed it myself. So why not stop all your moaning and take the time to do the same.
