Most cable providers have an app so that IR isn’t even needed. I use my cellphone to control our cable box regularly… no issues.

Why does everyone want to compare this to the 4th generation IPOD?? It is not meant to compete with the 4th gen. Maybe the Galaxy Player 5 but not the 3.6. It is a great little tool, I love it. Yes I have an Ipad, so I sort am a apple fan-boy, but also a fan-boy of Microsoft and Linux, love them all for what they are. So you got to love the Galaxy Player 3.6 for what it is, great! I purchased it to replace my aging Palm TX. If you absolutely have to compare the Galaxy Player 3.6 with something then compare it with the Ipod 3rd gen because they have the same screen resolution. In that case it beats the 3rd gen hands down. Just my two cents worth.

Its better than the ipod touch. It uses the wolfson dac (known for being one of the best pmp chips) also found in the galaxy s, galaxy player 4.0/5.0, and zunehd.

Your review misses a huge and glaring omission: the lack of infrared.
With infrared and a suitable app, this could replace conventional remote controls,
much like the Logitech Harmony series. Without that I’m unimpressed and uninterested.

Hmmm…you’re reviewing a media player but neglect to discuss the sound quality. Slap on a good pair of headphones and compare it to an iPod Touch as well as something from Cowen, Creative, and SanDisk. Then we’d have a useful review!
