NAND flash-based memory drives isn’t a new concept, and we’ve been using flash memory in digital cameras and now in MP3 players, but this will be the first time flash memory will be used instead of a hard drive in a notebook for consumers. The Q30SSD from Samsung will be the first notebook released to have this technology, sporting a 32GB NAND flash drive.
High costs and limited write cycles no longer a problem, flash-based drives are sure to be the way of the future as they offer lower power consumption than hard disk drives and are more durable, more compact in size, quieter, faster, and create less heat. The Q30SSD will be released only to Korean consumers for now and costs around $3700. No announcements have been made yet regarding launching the notebooks outside of Korea.
