Ahh I see where your misunderstanding is….you thought my post (about knowing patent laws) referred to the number of patents issued to the aforementioned firms. It did not.

My original comment referred to the need to understand patent law before making comments like someone is a “troll” or has “vague” patents.Youre right, one need not have any patent knowledge to read a table and report on who was granted more patents.

Shux I inadvertently hit ‘like’ instead of reply to your last post; my point, that youre clearly missing, was that the title refers to patent trolls yet the author (and some commenters here) seemingly has no idea what a patent troll is. And that IBM obtained the most patents last year is about as surprising as the sun rising this morning.

The author didnt call them “patent kings” (this is yet another new term, but I think I know what you mean), he called them “trolls” (read the title) which has a rather specific meaning in the patent arena.

Yes, sadly this is (yet yet yet yet yet x10e16) another case of an IP blogger, who has essentially zero knowledge of patent law/practice, commenting on patents and patent enforecement. This tendency is sadly rampant among tech sites, not just this one.

It’s no different than if these authors commented on the various new methods and physiological sequelae of cardiac valve replacement – having never taken even a college level entry biology class.

In my view, each tech site needs to hire an editor with at least rudimentary training in patent practice, but sadly, none of them seem to care.

Agreed. They need patents to defend against Apples blatant trolling on vague patents they had granted for technology developed by other people/educational institutions years ago. My money is on him posting this from his macbook while listening to his iPhone.

How many lawsuits did Samsung initiate before the apple onslaught?

Why is it trolling? SAMSUNG develop Tv Fridges Bluray DVD Cameras etc. Maybe they actually invented the technology and deserve to patent. Better than a screen with blackj border you touch.

If you didn’t know Samsung was number 2, then you haven’t been paying attention. From a year earlier:

“International Business Machines Corp., Samsung Electronics Co. andMicrosoft Corp. led the winners of U.S. patents in 2010 during a 31 percent record jump in grants of a main safeguard of intellectual property.
IBM, the world’s biggest computer-services provider, became the first company to get more than 5,000 patents in a single year, according to data from researcher IFI Claims Patent Services. Samsung trailed IBM’s 5,896 patents with 4,551, while Microsoft received 3,094, IFI said in a statement today.”
