The Wi-Fi version wouldn’t have a contract or data plan attached to it which I think is the real money saver.

I see iPads everywhere on the train, at conferences, etc. I have yet to see even ONE Samsung Galaxy Tab. I am sure t here will be competition in the tablet market, but the device must deliver a WOW.

Yup, Apple’s numbers are always sell-in while Android’s activation numbers are sell-out and not even including those many Android devices that sell-out and that don’t even activate.

They are basically testing the market with Galaxy Tab, hence why they are not waiting for honeycomb. I don’t think anyone would want to use a 7″ as a phone, but I can be wrong – it all goes back to personal preferences

Yeah, Samsung jump the gun with tablet and not wanting to wait for
Honeycomb. But it’s a good test bed for them to see how the tablet market
would do.

It’d be interesting to know what the actual sales figures were in Europe vs. North America – the phone functionality works on the European models.

The delay of a WiFi-only model does seem to have hurt them, though it’s not entirely clear how much they could’ve saved on the sticker price by leaving out the 3G components. Much of the cost, I think, is in the display rather than necessarily the cellular stuff.

Likewise, Apple always reports inventory figures, not movement to end-users. The moment a device leaves China, it’s a “sale”.

Sometimes there’s an extra million in there, which accounts for a good chunk of a quarterly “sales” figure. Having a bad quarter? Just crank up production into inventory.

Samsung relied on the telcos to make it desirable, but it obviously didn’t work. Samsung should have offered a WiFi option (for $200 less) directly to consumers, and would have made a killing.

If they’d have made it a true all in one device, effectively a blend of tablet and smartphone, I’d already have purchased it.

Enable the phone hardware and I’ll purchase.
