we lose control of the warranty that we could offer the customer,
because you never know what you’re downloading.”

This is just the same issue as for smartphones, not to mention computers. Rewrite the warranty to say you don’t cover software, and if you want to be decent provide a way to reset the camera to factory specifications. Problem solved.
