A few days ago, Samsung quietly launched a new storage option: the 4TB 850 EVO, a SATA SSD hailed as the highest-capacity SSD available for anyone to buy. It's a welcomed storage option for those who've stuck with their trusty HDD over capacity concerns, though the 850 EVO does come with a substantial price tag: $1,500 USD. On the plus side, the drive comes in a 2.5-inch form factor and it is available to purchase as of this past Friday.

The 4TB 850 EVO made its appearance at online retailers late last week...before Samsung made any sort of official announcement about it, both exciting and confusing consumers. It currently sits as the highest-capacity SSD Samsung offers in the 850 EVO line; those who need less space can also get 2TB, 1TB, 500GB, 250GB, and 120GB capacities.

Per the drive's product listing, it measures a mere 3.9 x 2.8 x 0.3-inches in size and weighs a touch under 2 ounces. The drive has a maximum sequential read speed of 540MB/s and a maximum sequential write speed of 520MB/s. The 4TB 850 EVO has a SATA 6Gb/s interface, and it is compatible with SATA 3Gb/s and SATA 1.5Gb/s.

Demand for the drive appears high. Adorama, for example, currently lists the 4TB model as "on backorder" and does not state an expected availability date. It is also listed on Samsung's own website, where it currently has a shipping time frame of 7 to 10 business days.
