Robot Lobsters Spy the Coastal Waters

Robots are cool, but robots that go underwater and mimic real living organisms are even cooler. A new exhibition called "Design Life Now: National Design Triennial 2006" is showcasing from December 8 until July 29, 2007 at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in NYC. Among the many unique items on display is a bionic lobster that crawls the ocean floor like a android lobster spy, gathering information from the deep.

The robot lobster is a part of the Biomimetic Underwater Robot Program at the Marine Science Center of Northeastern University. The robots are designed based on the neurophysiology and actual behaviors of lobsters. Also in the works, is an underwater robot eel-like lamprey that can propel itself through the water by undulating its body.
