Got a Playbook, 64gig version. Brother-in-law works for RIM so got a good deal on it. At first I didn't want it because the apps for it SUCK. However, ended up getting it and rooting it. Rooting it was the best thing to happen to the playbook! I have cool stuff on it now like DOSBox where I can play old dos games, Android desktop loads over playbook's desktop, access to the Android App Market, ScummVM, SNES and NES emulators so I can play old console games on it, Quake 3, and a vast amount of Android APKs converted to BARs and sideloaded (which are NOT available in the AppWorld).

If I my playbook wasn't rooted, to me it would me nothing more than a Paper-weight.

RIM core consumer base is the Enterprise business market where security and privacy is the main priority. So there's a real reason why they would want to enforce that level of security.

Mind that while freedom of use is desirable, one has to balance that against the chances of someone else getting access to your device and thus your information!

Like said in the article, the priority is patching easy remote methods like visiting the wrong site. So the concerns aren't just about authorized user access but unintended access as well.

While the more direct methods are the lesser priority and will only be patched during updates but that means unless you always feel the need to update the OS you could always just not update and then the last hack method would still work for you.
