The instant any technology company loses touch with what's possible coincides with the forfeiture of being an innovator in the industry.

I hate to say it, but RIM, Nokia, Motorola, Microsoft, and even my beloved Palm got exactly what they deserved. Rather than propel the mobile industry forward -- a task that any of these companies were (and still are) more than capable of -- they chose to stagnate while Apple brought 'the impossible' to market. That these companies could not even believe in the possibility of an iPhone-like device reveals how alien innovation had become to them.

It's almost comical how the launch of RIM's PlayBook is rumored to have been pushed back to Q2 2011 because of battery life that probably can't compete with the original iPhone let alone the iPad.

Just think, some time in the not-so-distant future, Apple may dismiss the innovation of the next great thing in tech, only to find itself in the position in which it put RIM et al.

Well RIM wasn't alone with this - when Apple previewed the iPhone in early 2007, claiming to release it mid-year many didn't believe this could be done. I had my doubts. What they showed off was so far ahead of what everyone else was doing, it literally blew my mind at the time. Remember that at that time, BB had no media functions, Symbian looked like it did in 2002, Windows Mobile was a joke, Android looked nothing like it does today - mobile development had been stagnating for years.

Apple previewed their phone in a very smart and - for them - unusual move. That generated buzz for the launch and ate into the competition's sales only as Apple didn't yet have a phone.

Later on they totally screwed up the sales model (exclusivity, and anyone remember revenue sharing?) but that's another story.

History is history, kind of wonder why RIM is still pouring cold water, shouldn't they be more worried about their own backyard instead of other's.
