RIM's major problem now is their inability to RELEASE anything. It's all talk and announcements, nothing tangible. Their new (leaked) phones look decent and should be "announced" on May 3rd, but it will then take MONTHS to actually release them. They are just unable to push anything out the door. It'll be pushing a year between new phone releases (does the Style even count), and RIM is solely a phone company. Samsung, for example, is pushing out world class phones and tablets consistently, while simultaneously making tv's, audio equipment, cameras, etc. Look at HTC, Motorola, Apple...Why can't RIM actually release anything!?

In all fairness, I think they didn't do anything different than anyone else.

For example, the iPhone took 7 months from 'announcement' to 'launch' and was plagued with delays. They never let reviewers touch the device until launch. iOS took 3 years to develop and the native SDK was not released at launch, it was promised 4 months later but didn't end up being released until the following year after even more delays.

Critics said Apple took too long releasing the device to market (7 months---too long in the tech industry!), that the device is already outdated, it didn't even come with 3G, the battery is not user replacable, there is no SD slot for expandable memory. The phone was admittedly launched unfinished without many features that the Palm Treo, Nokia N95, And BB Bold already had and most phones have had for years. Apple said they will come in future updates. Simple features like voice dialing, ability to search in the contact list (had to scroll through the whole phonebook), cut & paste functionality, ability to sync the To-Do list with a desktop computer, etc.

And I don't think anyone can argue that the iPhone was, and still is, a major player in the Smartphone market regardless of 'taking too long to come to market', regardless of 'being launched without features that phones have had for years', with 'hardware that is already outdated'.

I think the race is still starting with all these manufacturers... and there's always that chance that a new device will launch from a new company out of the dark and become a major contender. Happens all the time in the tech world.

I'm an Android user, but I administer the networks in the office and currently Apple, Win7 and Android do NOT have a secure solution for the office without updating each device independantly. iPhone is the worst offender requiring an iTunes account to perform upgrades and load software on the device. And if the user tries to install something from iTunes we get billed and they have to reimburse. If they leave the company their purchases don't go with them. There is also no blanket pricing for apps. None of the other devices have a 'push upgrade' or 'push software' function yet in the office environment. May work for SMALL companies, but where there are tens of thousands of employees, they simply do not cut it. We're not going to recall each device from the users to load a new patch on there every week. The primary issue with Android phones is different devices have different OS versions on them and there are compatibility issues with apps, also rogue apps/viruses can easily be installed and siphon sensitive data from the phones. A lot of viruses in the past year have hurt business confidence in these devices.

I'm not saying RIM is the future, but I am saying that currently the other players, though they may own the consumer market, they have a long way to go before they can be rolled out in any workplace that transfers sensitive data. (government, banks, military, etc.)

Same thing that happened to Nokia. Nevermind Nokia has the most smartphone users in the world. Nevermind they have big year over year growth. They were losing market share (a percentage of total market). I will say some of the management changes were very very good, Im not a Rim fan, but I do feel a little sorry for them.

I work for a company called StickerYou.com, where you can create your own custom die-cut stickers online and then order the vinyl stickers from us. So the PlayBook app is just going to be a modified version of the app on our site, dealing with touch input and the small screen better.

While the PlayBook simulator has been pretty good, I am certainly disabling certain features until I can test it on a real device. After launch and testing, I'll release a quick update. I wouldn't be surprised if many other app developers were planning on something similar.

RIM is done as a major player! Enterprise companies are starting to move away from RIM and to Apple, Win Phone 7 and Android. They are just as secure and don't require spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to maintain a BES server. RIM will still retain a small market share because they have cost businesses so much money that it will take time to transition, but their products are so far behind every other manufacturer that they are deluding themselves to think that they still lead in the smartphone industry. Just watch, in two years time they will be lucky to have a 5-10% market share.

Do they not understand the negative comments are based mainly on the fact it has taken them (in tech time) an eternity to get to market? STILL not out? Back when it was announced, dual core was just a thought in mobile devices. If they could have followed Apple's suit and released within a few weeks, they might have had a hit on their hands.

And now everybody and their mother is coming out with dual-core tablets, so this is just going to get thrown into the bunch.

O and another reason for negative comments from critics, NOT launching with email and calendar? My feature phone in 2004 had those features...

Totally and completely missed it!!! Well shut my mouth! :) [hmm, two days before my birthday]

I'm going to have to look into them more, since I'm back in the market for a tablet ... I like that Samsung FINALLY released their WiFi Tab, and for such a low price (for such a high-quality build), but I am really annoyed with them for refusing to ever update the bloody thing ... I am loving the marketed speed of the PlayBook but I am just getting tired of waiting. So, please forgive my rant.

What kind of app ... er, I guess we should wait for it to come out so as to allow you the full benefit of anticipation.

Edit: Ooooof, 499 wifi version ... Guess I should wait to see if HTC can beat Samsung.

Why is it that people don’t appreciate that we have 500 carriers in 170 countries with products in almost 30 languages? Well i can aswer to that. It is becosue we want phones not contracts! if you had sold phones in mine contry a year or 2 ago, i would have bougth one. But no, you are not selling phones, but instead a contracts from carriers (and by the way, only carrier in mine contry, who offers BB, have better cover over 1 city, and terroble in REST OF THE CONTRY).

I guess you missed the fact that the PlayBook is going to be released next week (April 19th)? :-)

I've made an app for the PlayBook and I really like the feel of the OS. RIM have already announced that the PlayBook's QNX operating system will be available on future Blackberries. The problem is that they are going to wait for 2012 to do this. RIM need to move on this a lot faster than that.
