There are several long running point and counterpoint arguments in the technology world. Among the most common are do video games cause violence in those who play them and one of the longest running is the debate over whether cell phones cause brain tumors or not.

A new report called “Cellphones and Brain Tumors: 15 Reasons for Concern, Science, Spin and the Truth Behind Interphone” was released today by the international EMF activists in conjunction with Powerwatch and Radiation research Trust in the UK among others. The report claims that previous studies on the topic were flawed.

According to the report, so-called “systemic-skew” has greatly underestimated the brain tumor risk associated with the use of cell phones. Among the items that caused the skew in previous studies were categorizing subjects using portable phones as unexposed and excluding many different types of brain tumors. People who had died from the tumors were also reportedly eliminated from previous studies. Hit the link above to read the details of the report.

There is no doubt in my mind that cell phone radiation in dangerous and this report confirms it, but my biggest concern is that everybody keeps looking at cell phones but the biggest potential problem is DECT cordless phones. It is mentioned in the report, but I bet most people were not aware that they are transmitting pulsed microwave radiation 24/7 even if a call is not being made. This is because the original specification called for constant communication between the base stations and all the handsets. This failing has been addressed in some parts of Europe with the introduction of Low Radiation DECT phones. The only problem is that the industry is hiding its head under a stone and keeping it quiet.
