Report: Apple's seeking exclusive TV shows and movies

Like Hulu and Netflix before it, Apple is looking into ordering its own original content for its iTunes customers, according to a new report. According to newly surfaced sources, Apple has put out feelers in Hollywood for studios and producers who may be interested in producing such content. The original programming, say the sources, would be for a lower-priced video service the company will reportedly introduce this upcoming September.

The information comes from The Street, which reports that it received word from a couple of individuals with knowledge of the plans. Apple reportedly began looking into original programming after having trouble drumming up networks willing to take part in its aforementioned yet-unannounced video service. The exclusive content would be offered through iTunes.

Eddy Cue is taking the lead in these talks, according to sources, but also including iTunes' content VP Robert Kondrk. If the company manages to create a hit original show, the programming may also boost sales of the newest Apple TV, a set top box not unlike Roku or Fire TV.

Original content has proven fruitful for companies like Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu. Amazon recently took home awards for its original show "Mozart in the Jungle," and previously received accolades for its "Transparent" show. Netflix has things like Narcos, Orange is the New Black, and House of Cards. Hulu, as well, has begun launching its own exclusive content.
