Wikipedia has an interesting article on the history of impact events. Earth has been hit before and not just the big one that did in the dinosaurs (Wikipedia article: Impact event). I discovered this while researching my science fiction short story “A Taste of Earth” in which an asteroid hits the earth now.

I still love how a complete miss (it hit nothing) is still called a “near miss”. Is it just me, or is a near miss the same as a hit?
