Worth Reading?
As anyone who has tried to digitally manipulate a photo of George Bush into da Vinci’s The Last Supper will know, accurately distorting perspective can be a tricky thing to do. w-h-i-t-e-v-o-i-d’s Christopher Bauder and Till Beckmann, however, view a hurdle as a challenge (as do hurdlers, of course), and have come up with a realtime image processing tool called Video Objects that, with the assistance of a projector, can superimpose perspectively-correct images onto real-life objects.
With the aid of either a projected helper-grid or an imported 3D model of the real-world setup, Video Objects allows a user to map out the geometry and angle of each item; when done, different images can be dragged and dropped between them, each time apparently “sticking” to the item’s surface.
Currently being eyed-up as a VJ tool, the software is being developed to handle projections onto spherical objects. Sadly there’s no download to be played with, but there is a video of the technology in action on their site.
