Real world MPG tests peg Titan XD Cummins at 17.7mpg combined

Fans of diesel-powered trucks have one more model that will use the popular Cummins diesel engines to choose from in 2016. Nissan has a Cummins powered truck that will sit in the gap between a normal half-ton truck like the Ford F-150 and heavy-duty trucks like the F-250. The new Nissan Titan will be available with a standard gas engine as well.

The big benefit in having a diesel engine under the hood is improved fuel economy and more towing power. MotorTrend recently had a chance to put the new Titan XD with the Cummins turbodiesel engine through its Real MPG testing to see how the truck would fare in the real world.

This is about as close to EPA fuel economy numbers we will get since the truck is exempted from fuel economy ratings by the EPA. In testing the diesel, Titan XD returned 20.8mpg in combined driving. The fuel economy numbers are 15.8 mpg city, 20.8 mpg highway, and 17.7mpg combined.

Those numbers would put the Nissan right between the economy of the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel at 21.2 mpg combined and the Ram 3500 HD at 15.5 mpg combined. Right between those two models is also where the new Titan XD sits as far as power and towing performance.
