Qualcomm wants to supercharge "digital eyewear"

So you say you want a pair of smart glasses, yes? The company that makes the processors in most Android smartphones and all Windows Phone smartphones, Qualcomm, is bringing about an environment where developers can make digital eyewear applications a reality.

Not that you couldn't make a smartglasses app before – you most certainly could have done so. But with Qualcomm's help, it'll be a whole lot easer. Qualcomm is releasing their "Qualcomm Vuforia SDK for Digital Eyewear" very, very soon.

This software package will help developers focus on "fully immersive, stereoscopic 3D content. This content will be delivered to the latest in "digital eyewear" – namely devices like the following:

• Samsung Gear VR (see our hands-on)

• Epson Moverio BT-200 (see our full review)

• ODG R-7

The third device is one we've not spoken of before. It's known as "the world's only self-contained, Snapdragon-based, wireless, head-worn system with stunning 3D stereoscopic see-through HD displays." This system runs Android, looks like a thick pair of black sunglasses, and has a 720p autofocus camera up front.

Developers will be able to get their hands on the Qualcomm Vuforia SDK for Digital Eyewear as early as this Fall. Near the end of this year, Qualcomm will be delivering a Beta of this system to a select group of creators – will see the results sooner than you might expect.

BONUS: One of the most awesome features of Vuforio is Toy Recognition. Developers will be able to add "digital features" to toys with ease to digital glasses – the same way you're seeing the feature work here with a tablet.
