Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 chipset to hit emerging markets in 2014

Qualcomm has announced a new chipset designed to help lead emerging mobile markets into the 64-bit era. Its new Snapdragon 410 chipset is integrated with a 4G LTE "World Mode" for "high-volume" (budget or entry-level) smartphones. The company's main target market here is China.

The Snapdragon 410 is designed for maximum OEM flexibility, meaning Qualcomm intends to sell it to as many handset manufacturers as possible without sacrificing handset brand differentiation. Relying on 28-nanometer process technology, the 410 includes a 64-bit-capable processor and an Adreno 306 GPU, supporting 1080p video playback and a camera up to 13MP.

The 410 is suited for 4G LTE and 3G with global compatibility. It's dual- and triple-SIM card-ready. It includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, FM and NFC by Qualcomm — and is tuned for GPS-, GLONASS- and China's BeiDou location systems. The chipset is also ready for "all major" operating systems, which Qualcomm lists as Android, Windows Phone and Firefox.

A more ready-baked version of the 410 is also available to OEMs as per Qualcomm's desire to move fast into the entry-level markets and put destination devices into the hands of consumers as quickly as possible. But despite this more rapid-development "Qualcomm Reference Design" scheme, its feature set is still sufficiently OEM-customizable, Qualcomm says. The Snapdragon 410 will debut in early- to mid-2014 and should go commercial by mid- to late-2014.
