I don't have any specific costs, unfortunately, but when I met with the mirasol guys back in November they said end-devices would be priced to compete with existing, E Ink based ereaders. That certainly suggests that the Qualcomm panel costs aren't significantly higher.

Jeff, Thanks for making me aware of the link and the press release!

I just became aware of their MEMS background. While MEMS is proven in accelerometers / gyros on electronic devices, such a large scale system component is ground breaking. Reliability will be the keyword here. I am looking forward to how this tech fares in the hands on the consumers.

The reason I like PixelQi is that they are low cost (same fab as traditional LCDs), and they turn off the display backlight to save power. Mirasol seems to be an approach diametrically in the opposite direction, towards the same end. I just hope they can keep the costs low!

For mass adoption, cost is the key. Just wish they shed more light on this in CES. On the other hand, not talking about it in any of the press releases makes me think it is rather on the high end (probably more than E-Ink even) :(

What you miss is looking at their (QM) future, their shares and their portfolio. Not being mean - think outside technology - where it matters these days.

Check out these guys - whytwitter - netbook pack - will do.

No fuss approach.

Pixel Qi I just don't get. Why do you want a power hungry TFT inside and a black and white display outside?

They have an announcement on their website about a fab in taiwan that started cranking out displays in June. www.mirasoldisplays.com look on the press page, 1st release listed there.

No clue on the cost question. Eink's wicked expensive isn't it? I know my Kindle was, anyway.

Now here is a comment: Qualcomm has to do something - otherwise they go.....

Not surprised as Google has enough “cloud”.

Having had a snoop what others are doing – the most interesting ‘dark horse’ is clearly the “Netbook Pack” from whytwitter. It seems they will have the ‘upgrade market’ under control before Chrome OS is launched late 2010.

Personally, I think these guys are ahead of the rest of the pack. Which reminds me… That was how Google started! As per others, may be people should look more at shareprices and movements there instead of trying to match up technology. Which is easy these days.

Checked out their website and they have a pretty dope video of it there, too.
www.mirasoldisplays.com/ces, from their homepage. This is way better looking than anything we've seen from mirasol, right? Did I miss something? When did this get so...imminent?

Three Questions:

1. What is the expected price it is expected to add to a product, compared to the traditional LCD? (Is it as costly as E-Ink?)

2. How does it compare to the PixelQi screens which also seem to be targeting a similar market?

3. Does it require new fabs to be manufactured? (Production ramp-up and cost might be high in that case)
