Hahaha this is the dumbest article I've read on any site ever. It is completely worthless...its basically him saying "I suck at video games and ill compensate by writing an article on it and blaming everyone else for being too good" . How is that considered content? First, he talks about ONE TYPE of online game (and so we can all guess this guy sucks at COD) and decides thats enough evidence for him to throw the ENTIRE online gaming feature under the bus...solid reporting there...

Hey look im not saying your a dumb n00b for sucking at online games..no no you were clearly a dumb n00b far b4 that. Why not try A DIFFERENT game, if a particular gaming community doesn't fit your taste? I'm sure there's an online disney game where they cover swear words with flowers and butterflies so as not to hurt your virgin eyes.
Or like you said just ignore online games altogether..just dont waste the time and general IQ of the overal online community with stupid articles where you whine about something that is essentially YOUR OWN shortcoming.

And to the people that actually like this article...what is this a Losers Anonymous? You needed this article to validate the fact that you suck at online games? Well congrats you found ur soulmate. Btw I totally SUCK at online games like COD and that does not bother me at all. Online gaming is by far the BEST THING that's happened to game consoles since their conception.

Agreed, on-line gaming presents you with the most obnoxious, racist and generally unpleasant microcosm of society that near-anonymity, (and the inability to slap someone upside the head for being a tool), can produce. Playing with friends is the only enjoyable option, the problem with that is arranging a time when everyone is not being forced by their S.O. to take them shoe shopping.

The store etc. being offline is mildly irritating, not being able to play online was little to no loss to me at all. I am aware however that thousands would think otherwise as not being able to play Black Ops could be a source of much frustration.

I'm still waiting for Sony to present me with an actually useful "gift" for the system being offline, as the titles they were offering I've either got/had or have little/no interest in. I'd rather have store credit.

Understandable points. I guess some people like it, and some don't!
I personally love playing online, even though it can be frustrating playing against players with a greater skill, but I feel "disconnected" when playing offline. It just simply gives me a happy feeling to know that I am playing with people around the world who are also sitting at their Xboxes (for me) with the controllers in their hands.

You think I'm making this about me? Get real. I love this site, and I love to read Ben and Chris's reviews, wach Rue's recaps, etc.

And I don't mind opinion at all.

But if you actually would, gee... I don't know... get off Don's tip and start doing your own research, you would see that this habit of posting controversial articles to lure in traffic works for about two or three months or so, but quickly alienates readers and traffic starts leveling off.

9 months ago, Tech Crunch was not only the single-most read tech blog on Technorati, but the 2nd most read blog of all. Go check what it is now.

I'm not the first one to comment on Siegler or Arrington or Lacey or any of those fools who turn out tabloid garbage in attempt to get a rise out oftheir readers.

And you know what they did in response to all the criticism they were receiving in their articles? They called their audience losers, switched to Facebook comments, and continued on, now confident that their BS could continue without anyone calling attention to it.

BGR is starting to follow the same path. Engadget and Gizmodo... well their traffic hasn't been formidable in years, save for Giz's handling of the iPhone 4 story.

GigaOm is another blog which is like a TechCrunch lite, and though Om Malik breaks good stories, the heavy number of opinion he injects into each scoop damages his credibility and his traffic, according to ALexa.

This is not an isolated incident and not about me. This is about a bold new content scheme that blogs have decided to troll their readers.

Again, wake up and do some thinking for yourself, if you even remember how. I'm not trolling anyone here. I'm not saying anything simply to give a rise out of anything. And I'm not stating opinions just for the sake of controversy.

I've just given you what... 5 examples of this BS on other tech blogs and you would probably be the first to deny it or say I'm making it up. Well, sir, kindly go stick one up your ass.

Slash ought to fire this guy before their traffic suffers.

Look, if you want to read a really intelligent discussion about video games go and find any article by James Portnow.
I almost have the exact opposite problem from the author of this article (aside from the cursing and juvenile nature of the users). Though I don't play games all that often, I'm very skilled when it comes to video games. I play single player on the highest difficulty level possible because I want to get the must out of the game (and my money) as possible. My friends (who play as much if not more than I do) simply can't say the same. Any bottom line is whenever I play the people around me it almost always ends up in a lambs to the slaughter situation. They just can't compete at my level and more often than not refuse to play against me.

There's no way around it. If I want to play another human being it had to be online because that's the only place where it'll be atleast interesting for the parties involved.

The best games are still single player games, I could list them and the one yet to come out but I won't bother. I don't care what anyone thinks GTA4 was a single player experience even though it had a online multiplayer mode.

TheGaySayer has a point though. This opinion piece isn't even smart. It doesn't bring anything to the table for it's reader's to chew on. It's mostly whining. If you're going to call yourself a columnist, at least get up the creativity to write an intelligent opinion piece.

But I guess if you enjoy sucking the teat of everything this guy puts out, be my guest. Everyone will happily let you. :)

I think I've said this before but I'll say it again because I'm close to not reading Slashgear anymore at all:

Stop writing these articles.

I like Davies, Vincent, Rue, and everyone else, but you are bringing down the whole quality of the site in an MG like fashion. Haven't you wondered why Tech Crunch's traffic has been leveling off?

Because their strategy -- and yours -- of trollbaiting your traffic is failing.

And it's not because people just stop or learn to ignore YOUR articles. They leave because they realize TechCrunch is willing to keep Siegler and all those other trolls on board no matter what kind of work they put out. Therefore, the good writers of TC get shafted in the end and go down with the ship.

You will do that to this place too. I can't in good conscience support this kind of BS and I'm sure many more feel as I do.

You do know you can mute other players right? Makes dealing with those obnoxious blow hards a lot easier.

Anyways this seems to be less of "there's no value in online gaming" and more "I don't like twitch gaming." Try out zombie mode some time, it is more strategy and teamwork and you don't have to worry about being completely outmatched.
