For months now I’ve said that Sony really needs to think about dropping their price on the PS3. Their sales haven’t been the best, and the two biggest complaints are a lack of good titles and the high price. Since Sony can’t make games come out any faster, the only thing they can do is drop the price. Sony finally did this, but was my theory correct?

You bet it was. Sony is reporting an increase of 135 percent in PS3 sales since they announced the price drop. Software is now up 15% and peripherals are up by 60%. I’m sure all of that was just a coincidence, right Sony?
I’m not saying that companies like Sony should be reading what I write and taking it to heart, but rather, they need to listen to their target audience and act accordingly. People have been saying the PS3 was too expensive for a long time, now that they listened to those people their sales are up. Lets just hope they keep those ears open.
PS3 Sales Increased 135 Percent Since Price Drop, Says Sony [via dailytech]

PS3 now have great price point and very close to xbox 360. If you calculate box 360 premium + HD dvd drive, it will be the same price as PS3 (and ps3 have 60GB hdd)
I would say the sales increase has been helped much more by all the new games that have been shown at E3 and games coming soon (MGS, Little big planet, Killzone, Lair, Warhawk ect). Sony are doing a lot more to help developers make better use of the PS3 architecture, so no more crap port versions of PC & XBOX 360 games. Sony also said that sales had increased before the price cut. I can understand that people think the PS3 is expensive, but like HaloFans stated above, if you buy all the add-ons for the Xbox then there is no difference between PS3 and XBOX 360 in cost.
The $100 price cut is on the discontined model; it will be $599 again when the new 80GB model (with the new controllers and no Emotion chip) comes out (after they sell out of their current stock). I think there is going to be some confusion when Sony ships the new model out to the stores.
I very suprised their sales have gone up that much; they are still sitting on the shelf collecting dust at all of the Target stores in metro Atlanta…
