While this really isn’t a huge matter in and of itself, it’s been confirmed that Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 3 console won’t have an HDMI cable included. This obviously only applies to the $600 PS3 (the $500 PS3 won’t have HDMI, period), and shows that Sony is really looking to cut costs anywhere they can in order to keep their losses at a minimum. So, if you’re looking forward to playing PS3 games or watching Blu-ray disc in 1080p, make sure you have a HDMI cable on-hand.

PS3

Again, this isn’t a big deal in the long run, for a number of reasons. First, while HDMI cables can come as high as $100, there are also the $13 variants that should work just fine. Second, come November the PS3 will still be the only console with HDMI capabilities, so paying $13 for a little cable will seem worth it when you’re watching the results on your HDTV. Finally, if you’re one of the lucky few to own a HDTV and a 60GB PS3, are you really gonna break the bank with a $13 cable?

    There’s other hidden costs too.

$600 for the PS3 + $75 for Belkin HDMI cable + $20 for a digital optical cable to go to the receiver + $70 for a game + $35 for a second controller. Total cost: $800.

    Now add tax.

Here in NY, a PS3 will cost over $850 NOT $600.

Can you get HDMI cable for less? Yes? Will the cable work? No. Belkin is the midrange, at about 1/2 the cost of the leading rip-off name brand. I have one going to my DVD.

And yes, I know HDMI carries sound as well. But that leaves two choices. 1) Buy a receiver with an HDMI input, which will then require $75 more for a second HDMI cable to go from the receiver to the TV, or; 2) Run the HDMI to the TV and have a digital optical running from the PS3 to the receiver.

For budgetary reasons, the latter is better. Receivers with one HDMI input are fairly new and still expensive. I have a 3 year-old DA-ES 3100 that doesn’t have HDMI and I’m not shelling out more money on a new receiver I don’t need.

Also, SOny just announced that the games won’t be in 1080p. 720p or 1080i only. I can get that rez on the 360.

Haha if you pay that much for an HDMI cable you are crazy. Check out http://firefold.com/category.aspx?categoryID=54 FireFold.com. They stock optical and HDMI.. at about 1/10 the price you listed.

I got a 6ft HDMI from them – works great.
