To DANNY SANTIAGO:

Buddy it is people like you that give the PS3 a bad rep, becasue after all of your research, your still an idiot.
i am not a fan boy of either becasue i have the money to afford both and therefore enjoy both.
FACT: the Sony network is junk now that more people have PS3's then every before, the lag is ridiculous, and i have a fios business line.
not to mention no one here probably has even touched their router to allow for the protocols they are playing on---translation, NATS UP everywhere, if you don;t know what a NAT is then you are a cheater.
ever wonder when your online playing and you know your not that good, but you keep killing people and they can't kill you no matter how exact they are on a headshot?
it's becasue your a NAT BOY cheater.
the PS3 can't watch videos online through the browser becasue you can't download a web browser directly on it.
the Xbox doens;t have a Web browser but does allow for netflix, which means microsoft yet again was in the loop on what we want to do with our system.
FACT: you cannot download another OS on the XBOX, this sucks and is because Microsoft doesn't want you using another OS.
hence the PS3 knows whats up to allow for LINUX which you can then download a browser on and watch hulu on to watch tv...NICE...

BOTTOM line both systems graphics are equal with the PS3 a littel ahead, but the network and communication of sony is years behind microsoft, the networking people.
microsoft sucks becasue it makes everything proprietary and won;t allow for other OS's on the system, but the new interface is nice, and the HOME on the PS3 is still only THE SIMS!
the blu-ray player is the best on the market and props to sony for seeig this and realizing it and screw microsoft for not being in the loop.

BUT to comment on the reason behind this BLOG>>>>>>if your upgrading your HDD on the PS3 then your a moron.
save the money, buy a few terabytes and netowork everything so both systems can share all movies, music, and pictures on your network.
you have missed the mark drastically if you have some things on each system and different computers in your house.
get with it.
setup a networked drive and share everything from one location to every screen in your house.....this is what the people who are using this technology are doing..this is what it is for.
I can download a digital copy to my networked drive on one of my computers and then serve it up to all three of my computers and my 56 inch samsung in the living room with my XBOX360 attached to it, or in my bedroom with my 46 inch samsung with my PS3 attached to it.
get with it, get a clue, your like two years ago with what you are doing here.
Not to mention i can rip a bluray to my network with linux commands and erver to my house network.....so WTF are you doing?
seriously, can you lsiten to or wathc everything you own on any screen in your house? well then rethink it and get with it!
both systems are good for totally different things. don't be cheap buy them both.

I've got the 80GB PS3, Ive got only about 500mb left on it with the installs of games, downloaded games, DLC for RockBand, and more. I've researched and researched and found that the PS3 is not limited to a HDD Size. Heat is an issue, so please don't just jump at any "sale drive." The drive speed is not an issue, however the cache of the drive IS an issue.

With all that in mind I commenced upon my research, waiting over a year to finally make my decision. I went with a HITACHI Travelstar 7K320 HTS723232L9A360. The drive has a 16mb cache and an average seek time of 12ms, and average latency of 4.2ms.

Upon arrival of my new HDD, I opened up my PS3 and went to work. removed the old one, set it aside and put in the new one. Plugged my ps3 back in and turned it on (Yes I had already done a back up of the things I wanted to keep). The PS3 gave me a error message that it could not read the drive. Ok, I unplugged the PS3 again removed the drive seeing that all the connections were clean and solid I replaced the drive. Plugged in and powered up, the PS3 saw the drive gave me the report about the drive, and went about to format the drive. About an hour and a half later the format was done, and I started replacing my back ups.

Now with the drive in my PS3 for a few months here is what I have noted from the previous stock drive to the new one. Seek and access times have been cut in half. While playing RockBand either local or online for me loading from one song to the next is about half the time it used to take. My ps3 stays cooler as well since the power consumption was cut down as well. Playback of DVD's, Blu-Ray's, Music CD's, or streamed video appears to be a bit smoother but I think that was more of a heat problem then anything with the media save for the BD live stuff.

The installing of games such as SoCom U.S. Navy Seals went a bit faster with the new drive versus the old drive. The old drive has been wiped put in an enclosure and I run Ubuntu linux off of it for my laptop.

All in all the whole process was easy, and I would rate it as a 2 on required tech level (out of 5). The only reason I gave it a 2 instead of a 1 is that some times you may encounter having to remove and re seat the new drive to get the PS3 to allow you to format it. Which would cause those whom are not as tech savvy to think that there is a problem with the drive or the system, when all it is, is that the drive is not fully seated.

Yeah I know that 320Gb is pretty much OVER KILL for the PS3, but ya know what at the price of $99.00 plus shipping to Alaska it was well worth the money.

I jumped at the PS3 only after I did my research and found out all the extra goodies that completely blow away the competition (that's you X-box 360). It seems to me that Sony did themselves a huge favor by waiting to bring out the PS3 because it was able to launch it with the new and extremely powerful Blu-Ray technology which greatly increases the quality of the games played on this system as well as the huge upgrade in video quality of the movies being shopped for the new technology. As we all know the DVD format wars was won by none other than Blu-Ray(ha ha ha you suck Microsoft). I mean the X-Box 360 will soon offer a Blu-Ray attachment for their system, sounds to me like Microsoft knew blu-ray was gonna win and still went with HD so as to make blu-ray available later for a price, hmmmm? The fact that PS3 is backwards compatible made it so much more attractive to me since I only bought the original XBOX so now i get to enjoy all those wonderful PS2 titles that have eluded me(damn Microsoft got it so wrong!) There is just so much being offered for the PS3; the free internet availability via wi-fi, blue tooth, backwards compatibility, a huge library of all the games in the Sony Playstation Universe, granted, PS3 doesnt have the large library that X-Box 360 have at the moment but (and this is a BIG BUT) the lifespan of this particular machine and all its future updates will prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that the Playstation 3 is the better system and has an extremely brighter future in games, videos, and upgrades. I mean really who hasnt thought of dusting off their Final Fantasy VII and rocking that joint all over again!!! The Sixaxis controller is ok and the addition of the Dual Shock 3 is pretty cool but nothing compares to titles like Resistance, Call of Duty 4, MGS 4, DMC 4, Assassin's Creed, VF 5, can Sony get better???? Hell Yeah!!! Titles like Resistance 2, MAG, Little Big Planet, RE5 will show just how powerful this system is and how young it still is and just the kind of future it holds for itself and all of us hardcore gamers and gamers in general. I'm looking forward to a long and enjoyable experience with my beloved PS3.

I'm trying to upgrade my 80GB to a 320GB, but the Restore option in the Backup Utility isn't working for me. It lets me choose the backup on my USB drive, but then after about a minute, it fails restoring and says there is no data backup. Has anyone ever seen this? I've been backing up my PS3 every couple weeks for the last several months, and only now am I finding out that the Restore option doesn't work? Thanks for any info. I'm going to try putting my backup drive in a different enclosure.

For what it's worth, it's a 320GB Seagate Momentus drive, and it's recognized fine and dandy by the PS3...but it's useless if I can't restore my old data to it!

Is it possible to put a faster speed drive into the PS3? I've just seen a Seagate Momentus 7200.02 200GB SATA 300 7200RPM 16MB 2.5" at reasonalbe price, will that drive work, or does it have to be a 5400 rpm drive?

Also whats the biggest capacity drive the PS3 can take?

Any help would be great, thanks.
if you want to use the old PS3 HDD as an external drive in an enclosure like I did, you'll find that windows will not recognize it. You'll have to wipe it with something like active@killdisk or some other disk wipe utility, then you can format it and use it.
It is my own soultion:
Put the old HDD taken from PS3, plug it into any notebook/laptop as a main HDD and start instalation process of Windows from a CD and you may stop it after format part. After formatting it, it will be recognized easily as ex.HDD :)

Does Xbox provide you with free internet, or web browsing? No it does no.

Ps3 may be a little bit harder to jump into games with friends, but still an AWESOME system.

Anyways, I was wonder. I have a 20 GB Ps3. And I am not sure if I need anything to play online with.

just to clarify a few things.
1: Betamax - yeah it lost commercially, fair play.
2: Audio CD was a joint venture between Sony and Phillips and to my knowledge wasn't a flop (Open Minded Gamer??).
3: DVD was developed by Toshiba (originally super density disc). Sony and Phillips were developng a competing Multimedia compact disc but left the race early (learnt the lesson from VHS?)
4: Looks like Blu-ray has won the format war.
5: WII isn't innovative? Wasn't it the first console with movement sensitive controllers? I'd say that was pretty innovative (See 9).
6: To utilise the Cell processor is very different to the way you program for the XBox 360 or a standard PC. The completely different archtecture means new compilers and software techniques need to be developed. In turn the first games aren't making the most of it, but give it a year or so and graphics wise the XBox 360 will have trouble keeping up.
7: All the consoles have their ups and downs, just pick the one that suits you!
8: If you want to upgrade the hard drive go ahead. Remember that the faster/larger they arethe more heat they're likely to generate. Stick with middle of the range (120 or 160GB), will probaly be more reliabe as they've been around for longer and bugs/issues will have been ironed out.
9: Pawanjit/ FLUBBA - what a T**t
10: Enjoy the PS3!

JJJ To answer your question. You just need any 2.5 SATA drive 1.5Gb. You could spend more money and buy a 3.0Gb but its not worth it. The ps3 wont allow it to run at full speed. I would also make sure its a 5400 RPM as its also not worth the extra money. 8Mb cache is also fine, even though 16Mb cache would be better. It also really does not matter with brand. Any brand with a special would do just fine. Check out newegg.com or hell, even Ebay. I bought my 250Gb Raptor from there to replace my 60Gb in my ps3. Also I would call your cable company and see if they offer cable internet as its by far the fastest affordable form to go. DSL will most likely not give you the broadband speed cable can. And cheap 20 to 40 dollar WIFI router will also work. As for RLMCman, The type and size of H.D.D has nothing to do with backwards compatibility. Its all due with the Emoticon engine or whatever its called. Only the 60Gb was made to be 100% compatible. Even the 80Gb is not 100%. I found mine used at Hastings for 50 dollars cheaper than the 40Gb, and works perfectly fine. Hopefully I cleared up some confusion and answered some questions.

Betamax and MiniDisc were not quite the failures everyone makes them out to be. Commercially, yeah, they're failures, but Betamax outlasted VHS in the long run.
BS, you say? Betamax is still used by at least 95% of all TV stations, especially for commercial production, though they're moving to high definition now. Minidisc is also still widely used in media companies. Both are good formats, just not commercially successful.

Sony learned from past mistakes and successes. Though they've made new mistakes, they've also repeated success. They used their model for establishing DVD with Blu-Ray disc and quite easily defeated Toshiba in the format war. Less than 2 years? Wow. And that was with Paramount going HD DVD exclusive.

But, you can't argue with the numbers. 10 million+ to 1 million was too wide of an early gap for HD DVD to compete.
