Well, maybe not an literal fortune, but the news coming out of TGS 2006 isn’t promising. Japanese gaming website Impress Watch has reported, citing several “reliable” sources, that the PlayStation 3’s games will run buyers between 8,800 and 9,800 yen. In US dollars, that translates to roughly between $76 and $84 USD. So on top of the $425 console (Japanese price), buyers can also expect to pay almost $100 to get just one game to play on their new, ultra-powerful console.

PS3 Untold Legends

While US prices for games weren’t part of the report, one can assume that the prices Stateside will be similar. So over here, assuming you can find a console for Christmas, you’ll be paying $499 for the console, $75 for one game, and at least one extra controller. So between the game and the console, you’re looking at closer to $600+ (after tax); should you decide to get a 60 GB PS3, the price will be over $700. So start saving, ladies and gentlemen; Christmas is only a few months off!

I can’t even remember when games were that cheap Jasseik! Even the older Nintendo games were in the sub $30-$40 range.

These games have better graphics and much more elaborate in game play. I think it should be worth every penny. If you’re going to shell out $600 for a game system, you can’t possibly expect to go cheap on games - can you?

this is why piracy rates is high in 3rd world countries

I think it’s extremely presumptuous to assume that these games will be any more advanced, gameplay-wise, than a comparable Xbox 360 title. Especially considering that many PS3 games will also be released on Xbox 360 (two examples being GTA 4 and the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog game).

And sure, the graphics might be better, but if all you’re looking for is eye candy there are much cheaper ways to go about it.

The game prices, at least IMO, aren’t that big of a surprise; Sony is losing a LOT of money on this console, and it stands to reason that they need to make it back somehow.

yeah no matter how much cost they try to cut most modern console makers will bite the cost for the sake of profiting from game sales

At the end of the day, game piracy hurts everyone - forcing higher price.

I’m just giving Sony the benefit of the doubt. PS3 is possibly Sony’s only saving Grace. When was the last time they launched a product that changed the world?

The PS2 has done extremely well for them, and I suspect that it will continue to sell well even after the PS3 debuts (remember that the PS1/PSOne only saw production cease in March of this year after debuting in 1995). So I think that, given the massive PS3 shortages, Sony’s gonna be counting on PS2 hardware/software sales (especially the upcoming God of War 2) to keep the gaming division afloat.

I also don’t expect US prices to reach $85 a pop; but I don’t think $75 is out of the realm of possibility. WE’ll just have to wait and see what November brings.

any info on Wii’s game pricing ben?

Nintendo has stated that their own games won’t exceed $50; my guess would be that third-party titles wouldn’t go higher than $50 either, but there’s been nothing concrete stated about third-party games as yet.
