The terrible software (their only good games are a remake and an old port: Zelda and Street Fighter) on the platform has resulted in poor hardware sales, the hardware itself is bulky and has terrible battery life. The almost absent online social features hinder the experience. Most of all the main selling point of the device os a gimmick that adds no real improvement to the gameplay experience other than on a superficial level.
So no, I would not say Sony is doomed, considering the anticipation of the Vita. If anything Nintendo is doomed-they are already decresing the price of 5 month old hardware and taking paycuts.

tldr; 3DS is bad and is performing badly, Vita will kick its ass.
