Too bad not everyone has a portable ps3 to play games remotely on the go, nor would everyone rather play ps3 games remotely on the vita then an actually 1080p tv. If people preferred graphics over fun and gameplay, Nintendo and the ios/android gaming market would be non-existent. As we’ve seen multiple times, more specifically with the immense success of the Wii, that’s not the case.

Or maybe…..any of those Final Fantasy games that are out on Iphone? How about the Dead Space Iphone/Ipad game? That’s a pretty darn good game. For the price of this + memory card + one or two games you can buy HUNDREDS of Iphone games and out of those hundreds no doubt you can find enough good ones to sway the balance by far in favor of owning just a single device. Are you really going to carry this around? I’m sorry but my pockets aren’t big enough to carry my phone, my keys, my wallet, change, etc AND this thing. That means it would stay at home. Since I would only play it at home, why wouldn’t I just play A REAL console on an HDTV instead of this? Speaking of that, this is priced like a PS3, why would someone buy this instead of a real console? I smell failure.

It doesn’t take a genius to look at the numbers. They’ve only sold about 520k PSV units over the last 6 weeks. That isn’t a heartening number.

If this is what Sony is expecting, I’m quite fine with that. But I find that really hard to believe. The years-old PSP is outselling that PSV. That’s got to hurt. You’d think the PSV should bury PSP numbers. They have to drop the price if they want to move more units, but that means they have to play an even longer game in getting profit from games.

Then Nintendo is selling a lot more units. Then after that, Apple sold 500k iPod touchs every 5 days last quarter. Then smartphones will catch up to PSV hardware in few months. The hardcore handheld gamer that demands hardware controls niche is shrinking, while iPod touchs and smartphones have 95% of the functionality.

Sony needs to do something. And that something isn’t more of the same, but more specs. The business model isn’t surviving in today’s market.

And yes, quad-core is expensive. It makes everything about the device more expensive: it requires a larger battery, it requires more developer effort to take advantage of, it’s more expensive in of itself, it made their time-to-market longer.

The price should come down as the PSP Go was not selling until the price went down to around £140-£160 !!

The same happened with 3DS Console.

What more do you need to start taking serious note on the fact that the price is a major factor to form a purchase decision!

Selling for $300? IT ALREADY FAILED & THE CONSUMERS HAVE SPOKEN. Wii sold millions not because it was a power horse. It was cheap. That paper weight is almost twice the price of a 3DS & that lil’ puppy will just sell more this holiday season.

Backward compatible w/ old psp UMD games? You’re out of luck. 3DS will play current DS & DSi games.See you at the bargain bin Vita. I see nintendo lowering the price of the 3DS to $149, by Spring.

I I disagree with that – the lineup has a dinstinct western lineup to it with little to intrigue the JP market. Sure Dynasty Warriors and Everybody’s Golf are known in JP but the likes of Uncharted, wipeout 2048, Little Deviants, Modnation Racaers and Motorstorm RC have a much wider appeal in the west.

Handheld gaming is making a drastic change. I currently have a 3DS and a iPhone 4s. The 4s is capable of some pretty impressive graphics with no lag whatsoever. Now I am not using it as my main portable gaming machine though. I have the 3DS for that. The Vita will be $250 at lunch. That’s over two hundred dollars folks. That’s a lot of money. You could get a capable smartphone for less then that that can make phone calls AND play games. Sure you lose the physical controls, but iCade might change that a bit. Even still, is it worth paying $250 to have physical controls? No, so that certainly can’t be the only thing Vita has going for it….it needs a good game library and not just mobile versions of PS3 games…

Again, the biggest contributor to the shortage of sales in Japan is not the fact that the console itself has little appeal. It’s mostly due to the fact that the titles currently available in Japan are much more catered towards Western consumers rather than the Japanese. They [the Japanese] don’t care so much about Uncharted and whatnot. But once Monster Hunter and some of those other JRPG’s start rolling onto the device, it’ll sell just fine. Remember the PS3? That had the slowest start ever, yet it’s now [almost] leading home console sales and is definitely the only console of its generation with any kind of a future, in terms of development. So in short, DON’T count out the Vita just yet.

You, my friend, understand nothing about digital gaming or where consumer interests lie. Your proposed device already exists, and it is failing far worse than handhelds are. Okay, I suppose the exact proposed device does not exist yet, but the Samsung Galaxy Player is similar in philosophy. And the Galaxy Player is not exactly selling like hotcakes. The main problem with iPod Touch competitors is that there’s no brand recognition. If it’s not an iPod, there’s little chance people will get it when the iTouch is so universally known. Also, where there might have been brand recognition is negated by the fact that PDA-type devices that are similarly sized and priced to the iPod Touch are rapidly losing market share, due to the availability of smartphones and tablets. Whereas the 3DS is selling strong, and the DS and PSP are still holding their own as well. So to counter your argument, no, it would not be in Sony’s interest to turn one of the bestselling handhelds into a freaking smartphone without the phone. It’s really an imbecilic idea. Anyways, Sony is already making the Walkman Z, which is an Android iTouch-like device.

And virtual control buttons are not adequate for 95+% use cases. It’s not even funny how off that original statement is.

And saying that the quad-core was excessive is like saying we should all be content with our PSP’s and that handheld gaming only deserves to be as good as Angry Birds.

Sony would have been better off making an iPod touch competitor running Android. Forget the buttons, sticks and knobs. A touchscreen, stereo speakers, a small set of buttons for home, volume, mute, etc, 4.5″ screen, 3000 mAh battery, WiFi+HSPA, sensor package, etc. And most important of all, a digital game store.

This whole business of selling games on cards and cartridges has run its course. Virtual control buttons are adequate for 95+% use cases. Even the quad-core A9 with a SGX543MP4 was excessive. Should have went with half that.

Ugh, it must chap their butts! To have spent so much to get it shipping…
