You're an idiot if you spend $600 on a tablet or a smartphone to play games. Most people I see who own a tablet use it to play simple games and these same people have an Iphone. If you going to preach about the cost of the PS vita in your other posts, then you are blind. Many people who owns an Iphone are throwing money at apple every year for an upgrade of the next Iphone that have only minor improvements same goes for the ipad. With the PS vita you know what you are getting and what its going be for.

Maybe look at the name of the devices it will answer all you question.

SmartPHONE: a phone that can do multiple stuff adequately but at the end of the day it is mainly used as a phone.
Playstation Vita: a device dedicated to for gaming but can do multiple stuff adequately but at the end of the day it is mainly used for gaming.
Tablet: a device used for browsing internet, checking emails, watching videos, and reading ebooks, and play simplify games, but at the end of the day its not a dedicated gaming device or a phone. Its an expensive version of the iphone without the ability to make phone calls.

By the way, try downloading a 5gb game onto your smartphone, i bet that you cant because theres a limit.

proprietary memory cards, i am literally coughing up my lungs with rage.

Every time you turn it on it will refuse to work without the new update, then they'll remove some of the functionality of the device to protect their copy written material, then they'll give your credit card details to some Russian, and just to really rub your face in the dirt they'll install a root kit on your computer.

Enjoy.

The gaming industry is just like any other, they're all in it for profit. However, how much you pay for a game also tends to determine the quality of the game. Meaning you won't ever be getting the same quality of games in the $10 or less category as you would in the higher priced categories.

It's just a question of what your gaming needs are whether you find it worth the price or not. Also mind the difference in revenue models.

Android and iOS apps can make revenue from ads and other hidden cost methods. While many games sold for Nintendo and Sony gaming devices are all up front costs.

"I already play PC titles on my GTab 10.1 no problem." I severely doubt that. Perhaps small time games like Octodad. But actual dedicated PC games? Full specs and everything? Absolutely not!

"A Galaxy Nexus and Dualshock 3 fit in a pocket just as easily as a Vita and a phone, while doing so much more."
Most gamers couldn't care less about multi-use devices. You could have a phone that does everything, but a dedicated device for what the phone can do will always do it better. No matter how advanced our technology will get. The majority of people who buy, Vita, Nintendo 3DS, PCs for gaming, PS3s and Xbox 360s are hardcore gamers. The majority of the people who buy smartphones don't buy the smartphone for the games, it's just an added bonus. So please stop trolling about things you can't understand.

Okay, @ph00ny:disqus , I've been reading this comment thread, and I've deducted this: you're a Vita-hater and a non-gamer. All you do is go on and on about smartphone games. Thing is, smartphone games don't come anywhere near the quality of a Vita game. Go and play ShadowGun or Infinity Blade and then come back and play a Vita game like Uncharted. There's no comparison. People like you, I swear...do you WANT portable gaming to die? Gah!

Lol. This would be true, except A) gaming titles on iOS will NEVER be as good as games on dedicated platforms like PS3, PSP, and PSVita. And B) even if iOS games got as good, smartphones will never have physical controls except oddities like the Xperia Play...so moot point. I hate it when people keep saying things like this; seriously, do you WANT this to happen?! Crazy...

You should check out the reviews for Uncharted: Golden Abyss, it really is one of the best games available right now.

While quite of few other titles should be coming out over the next few months... A few just came out. Unit 13, military game, is coming out March 6. Resistance: Burning Skies, is coming out May 29 but should be worth the wait. Silent Hill: Book Of Memories is coming March 27. etc...

Sorry, but resolution alone doesn't equal a better screen, you're ignoring image quality, color range and intensities, refresh rates, viewing angles, level of reflection, etc. Even a high resolution screen can still look terrible and those that don't usually go into much pricier devices.

While most phones out now definitely don't have better resolution and those that will are months to up to a year away and without a contract deal will cost more anyway.

Meanwhile, carrying a dual shock 3 controller will add something extra to carry in any case and means you have to put the main device down somewhere because your hands will be busy with the controller and that usually also means a way to keep the device upright and facing you.

Hardly a portable friendly gaming device when you factor all of that together.

Add it also won't improve the gaming capabilities for Smart Phones or tablets all that much because no one is designing major games for any Smart Phone!

Any game designed for a Smart Phone or Tablets will be predominantly be catered to most users who won't be carrying around gaming controllers. Never mind not all devices have support for linking to gaming controllers yet!

While Onlive requires broadband to even work, meaning it's useless unless you have fast Internet, and many games won't work well with a touch only interface because they were designed for devices that aren't limited to just touch. Especially PC games that were created for mouse and keyboard usage. Controller helps, but as listed above it has problems too. While the same is true of having to carry around a keyboard and mouse.

Never mind tablets are even less portable than either the PS Vita or Smart Phones to begin with, and not many tablets are offered with contract discounts like Smart Phones.

All of this doesn't even begin to get into the problems with ARM's hardware fragmentation, closed drivers and dealing with a range of GPU and CPU configurations that make gaming optimization a nightmare for developers who want to push what's possible.

It's one of the reasons the iPad generally has better game options because developers only have to deal with one platform and can thus optimize to get the most performance out of it, but even then most games are still generally basic and still has people looking for work around solutions like Onlive.

The PS Vita provides near PS3 like gaming in a single portable device, with no need of accessories like game controllers, etc.

Whether that's good enough is up to everyone who wants to consider it but it should not be under rated just because some people feel they either don't need a dedicated gaming device or want to justify the purchase of what they did buy. There are people who will like this device and as far as gaming is concerned it will suite their needs.

You people don't get it. Every top flight phone coming out now has better resolution. A Galaxy Nexus and Dualshock 3 fit in a pocket just as easily as a Vita and a phone, while doing so much more. Now your control issue is taken care of... No more on screen controls that you all seem to hate.

Add onlive to the mix and the Vita seems like a total waste. Playing PC games on the Vita will NEVER happen, I already play PC titles on my GTab 10.1 no problem. Sorry, but Vita is epic fail.

"And my original point still stands where smartphones can be used as a
gaming and most folks already own a smartphone and does not have to buy
another device to supplemental marginally better experience"

Sorry but we're not talking about marginally better experience. The difference between a dedicated gaming device and what a Smart Phone can provide is night and day difference.

While most games for Smart Phones cater to the what is possible to run on the more basic phones to reach the largest customer pool. So the few that can handle more don't get fully taken advantage of as would a dedicated gaming system.

Smart Phones are intended as general purpose devices. They can do many things but none of them as well as a dedicated device.

Like just because many Smart Phones have a camera doesn't mean you would never want to use a dedicated camera or camcorder. Especially when it comes to night and high speed photo taking where the small image sensors in smart phones are completely inadequate.

The same logic applies to gaming, improvised solutions only go so far before you want or even need something better. The type of games that work well on a Touch only device are limited in scope and variety.

So it's fine that you feel you don't need more but that in no way means everyone should feel the same when many want more than you're obviously satisfied with!

Is the 1280x800 5.3" HD Super AMOLED screen common? Absolutely not!

Did I say better than all Smart Phones? Nope! I said "pretty much any", the Samsung is the exception and not the rule.

Are you going to be paying the same amount for the Samsung as you would the PS Vita? Again No! You can get a fairly powerful laptop for the cost of the Samsung Galaxy Note.

While video codec support isn't perfect on any Smart Phone either. So while less limiting you'll still be compromising and having to do conversions if you watch videos not already compatible.

Does it matter you can use a Smart Phone for many of the exampled usage scenarios? No! The response was to the article author for figuring out where and when such a device could be used.

So sorry but everything stated is valid.

It's not hilarious, just the facts. Gamers care more about actual gaming and Smart Phones don't provide anything but a compromised and usually basic gaming experience that's only satisfactory to a casual and usually non-gamer.

The PS Vita's 5" screen with 220.29 PPI is better than most device resolution for pixel density, even if it wasn't it more than makes up for it in color and image quality, and you won't be using it to read ebooks, which is the main thing that would benefit from just higher resolution. You're not going to notice any problems watching movies, etc. on the PS Vita.

The form factor is may be a little bulky but is designed for maximizing ease of use for gaming.

The play time has been stated by many to be adequate, though I agree on the proprietary memory cards and the game pricing could be better but many are games that you simply can't play on a Smart Phone.

While many games you absolutely don't want to block what's going on the screen, but touch only interface and small screens means you can be covering most of the screen with your hands when you should be watching what's happening. Add the limited control functionality and lack of accuracy and the few times a touch may be beneficial is far outweighed by all the times it proves a negative. Especially when what you need to do is near the on screen controls, which placement then gets in the way of the game play.

Again, Smart Phones lend themselves to only basic game play. Real time action games, complex controls, etc are all things Smart Phone gaming suck at. Especially if you want to play games that you would normally play on a console.

Calling me a non-gamer just because i questioned the reasoning behind calling a smartphone gaming is hilarious

You're talking about a lot of compromises but what about PS VIta? Low res screen, bulky form factor, inadequate play time on battery, and pretty much mediocre at best for any non-game related tasks

This is before we get into the cost of the games, proprietary memory card issues, etc

btw, i don't have any of the titles you've listed there on my phone and i don't see why the touch interface is a big issues. In FPS/TPS games, it seems to be much more intuitive where you can pick and choose where you want to touch and move within the game

i beg to defer on a lot of your points

Specially #9 1280x800 resolution 5.3" SAMOLED HD screen in note will look much better playing movies than a 5" SAMOLED at 960x544. Not to mention video codec support

I wouldn't even bother with some of the other points since same logic applies with the smartphones

Usage scenarios...

1) While Commuting, usually via public transportation where all you have to do is kill time and wait for your stop.

2) Remote play, in case someone is hogging the TV and you want to get in some time with your PS3 semi-remotely.

3) Relaxing on the couch or bed and killing time, when not in the mood to read or take a nap.

4) Gaming, music, and videos on the go when a tablet is too big or is needed for something else. Like on a business trip, or when doing something that you can't carry everything with you, or when you don't want to be bothered by calls...

5) Any boring situation, like having to stay in the hospital, waiting for your other devices to recharge, etc., where you have nothing else to do.

6) Help deal with depression and/or stress, forget worries, etc.

7) People like me who find mental stimulus more effective than a cup of coffee.

8) Conserving power, PS3 is a bit of a power hog and having PS3 like games on a portable can mean killing time a little greener.

9) Movies will look better on the 5" OLED than pretty much any Smart Phone.

10) Score points with the kids in the family :P

8) Conserving power, PS3 is a bit of a power hog and having PS3 like games on a portable can mean killing time a little greener.

If you have to ask what's wrong with Smart Phone games then you're obviously not a gamer.

Smart Phones are great multi-purpose devices but they aren't great for any one particular usage.

Gaming on a Smart Phone is a compromise, you only have the limited touch only controls where you are forced to cover part of the screen to interact. Games ported from other gaming platforms are cumbersome at best as they aren't optimized for touch only controls. Games in general are pretty basic and aren't intended for more than a short term distraction, you won't be gaming for hours on a Smart Phone.

So sure, if all you need is something like Angry Birds, crossword puzzles, bowling, and a few basic shooters then Smart Phones may be all you need. Gamers, however, want more and not everyone wants to game only home...
