If I have to look at 100s of ads... why would I *NOT* want them to be targeted towards the things I like???

1. Block the ads entirely.
2. Show ads that I like.
3. Show ads that I hate.

Doesn't turning on "do not track" only do #3????

#1 has NOTHING to do with "do not track" at all.
#2 is a good idea and only works if I turn "do not track" *OFF*.
#3 seems to be what everyone likes. (Turning "do not track" ON)

I bet millions of people think "do not track" does #1 and #2... when it's really doing #3 instead.

Turning "do not track" on... is actually working *AGAINST* you.

Personally, I couldn't care less if you know I buy an awful lot of "books, DVDs, and ink cartridges" online.

This sounds bad for consumers (not allowing DNT to be "on" by default) but in fact it is good. If the default is "on", advertisers will never choose to honor it. It would just be an ignored setting that, perhaps, will make people think they are protected.

There's still a real question about whether it will be respected, but at least now there's a chance.
