This seems like a violation of privacy to me. I don’t see any reason why I, as I’m walking down the street, should be able to be photographed by this new tool, and subjected to a facial recognition search. To me, this seems invasive, unless I’ve done something wrong already.

I see the benefit in actually having a device like this available to law enforcement. I’d question the actual efficiency though. How long would someone have to wait while it cross checks all the faces in the database (national and or local) looking for a match? That’s if the person is even in the database at all –

if it works and doesn’t produce many false positives it could reduce profiling issues and make it harder for officers to justify harassment

Personally I’m for it. If officers could determine if a person was on the wanted list in moments at every stop they could clean up a ton of outstanding warrants. My primary concern is about a false positive more than privacy. We already surrendered privacy when we gave the police computers and the right to demand identification. With the the access they have and your id they could find out everything in the legal system if they wanted. This will just allow them to find the fake ID’s easier.
