What’s the use for Joe Bloggs who is searching for specific information in finding out that there are pompous writers out there who want to waste their time?

It’s one thing to be a raconteur, someone with such character that readers dip into your life for a taste of you and your worldview, but people who write in such a way sell that as their product, in fact it’s usually others who have told them that this is their role, others, their editors who have conditioned them for this, it’s pretty darn obscene to think that’s what you are yourself, that you’re worth all that.

Here’s the thing, almost anything can be explained to the inexperienced. In fact it’s the foundation of literature and reportage, the very basis and reason for writing and communication. Take away the communication and what have you got left? Not a lot.

The job is to communicate.

Now you can cherry pick what it is you want to bring to your audience, what exactly it is you wish to divulge. It doesn’t have to be your experience, it can be your fiction if you like, but it does have to be something pertinent. If you’re going to the effort of trying to communicate and want an audience then treat them with a little respect and make it something that others would wish to read, not merely something you would wish to write.

How can you explain the taste of ice cream satisfactorily to someone who has never eaten it? Much easier to eat it.
