Exactly man, while I admit Sony tends to listen better than Microsoft, but not as good as Nintendo, they have done some obviously silly things since the downward trend with the PS3.
the PSP for example was pirated a crap ton due to the nearly 4+ years of game dryspell so in turn they made the Vita less accessible, which has in-turn brought the overall cost of owning the platform a crap ton more expensive. In hindsight, all Sony had to do was listen to the customer and even with the pending PS3 release at the time, there were still studios who wanted to make a portable anything.

Lets just hope Sony doesn't repeat itself for a second time. although its starting to truly appear that way.

You hardly deserve a response as I think you are an obvious troll just trying to relay disinformation but in the spirit of true gamers I will respond non the less.

Why Is xbox live superior? Have you ever played a PC online because I've been doing it since it began...on PC and PS3 is every bit as fast and lag free as my PC.

Xbox live is not without lag, the only difference is that they have cross game chat which I think is stupid. Yes it is a feature but I don't want to immerse my self in skyrim and have some kid interrupt me asking me to play COD.

LMAO, whatever dude. I know plenty of 360 trays that have been stuck shut and remember this SONY IS NOT LIKE MICRO$OFT. Sony has reliable products...no electronics device is without errors which is why the industry standard for failures is 3%. Xbox 360's was 55% for 5 years and now you have xbox gamers calling for a sleek tray slot instead of old disk tray.

Xbox has not listened to anyone. They had to add some features because they were grossly outdone. Even Nintendo Wii has had wifi and a internet browser since launch. It's controllers have a gyroscope, bluetooth and a speaker meaning they have more value too. The cheap, SD quality Wii has had more features than xbox 360 most it's life until last year when they finally added entertainment apps.

Sony lost great money because of everyone that jumped ship due to either the high price or the fact that 360 had an entire year as the only next gen console. About 8 million sold that year...friends game with friends and the snowball started to roll..that's called online market by default.

Sony's only faults this gen: Removed backwards compatibility underestimated how huge online play would be this generation & made the architecture hard to develop for.

This is far better than xbox: RROD, pay to play, no netflix without gold sub, xbox live $60/year = $300 every 5 years, best exclusives are on PC, no real exclusive content, nothing for $60/year sub to netflix, disk scratching, disk swapping, high console price but no high tech like blu ray/browser in console and blue tooth/gyroscope in controller.

You are acting like a couple of USB connections and loosing Linux due to hackers is some huge deal but then act like all of xbox's faults are nothing when it's really everything. What the hell dude! more than half of them failing isn't enough for you? You not having standard hardware that even the cheap ass Wii has? You being the only people in the world that have to pay to play and yet still have adds on your homescreen?

LOL, you even paid top dollar for that POS and then had to buy a blu ray player and still couldn't browse the internet on your big screen TV. Everything you have..PS3 has had for ages. All your new stuff is old news to us.

Decent article Eric. I agree with some of your points. Sony should focus on new IPs and go crazy with indie games on PSN. I have franchise fatigue and have lost all interest in the current gen because nothing fresh has been going on in a while. My worry is that with the next-gen systems we get more of the same with more photo-realistic graphics (e.g. Uncharted 4, Metal Gear Solid 5, Gears of War 4, Halo 16?!?). While Nintendo does the same, they manage to execute a re-imagining of a franchise in a way always seems fresh although the exact same story is being told each time. And that's where I think Sony and Microsoft fail. If they are going to use the same franchises they need re-imagine the universe of that particular game and re-invent it artistically because more polygons will not cut it.

Sony could shake up things if they do a few things like:

- just push new IPs

- better online system with a gamer hub section on the xmb that shows all online gaming stats of you and your friends in flashy nice interface (you know the next Xbox should have one)

- not overprice the system but should actually slightly underprice it at 299$ IMO.

Too many people that I spoke to about the PS4 are convinced they do not need to upgrade anytime soon, at 299$ it will be an impulse buy. People want something fresh and whoever convinces the masses they have the freshest "game console" will win this next generation. If Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are not careful they may end up all losing to a competitor that they never even considered in the race.

"The announcement of a new console is all well and good, but once the party’s over and the reveal has been made, Sony then faces the difficult task of making the next PlayStation successful in the new generation."

Re: Absolutely, and is true with any technology. The PS3 was, arguably, the last game system that had graphic abilities greater than then-modern PCs. For the PS4, Sony can only hope to offer an alternative to PCs.
What does that mean?
- The PS4 must have a USB (or equivilant) keyboard for the MMORPG fans
- It must continue to offer Netflix and be a portal for Hula, YouTube and all other streaming services
The point here is any PC gamer should find evrything they need in a PS4 as can the online multimedia crowd. To some extent, the PS4 should even be an alternative to the abundance of Andoid TV dongles and always hyped, but never present, Apple TV for surfing the web on your bigscreen. This continues what Sony has already offered, a DVD and BluRay player for free with purchase of a gaming system.

"First and foremost, Sony needs to get even more serious about securing exclusive games for the PS4."
Re- Quite true. The PS4 must also continue what the PS2 and PS3 have been, the best gaming system around with, arguably, the best games. A new focused attack on the PC realm, combined with their top-tier online play, will secure the PS4 throughout its lifecycle. As another post said, "the console that creates the first world of warcraft doesnt just win the war it ends the war for all time."

Q - Perhaps Sony should offer two levels of the next PS4. Not in terms of memory, but in entirety. The casual gamer should only need 4-6GB of RAM for the games, almost no storage except USB port and only a moderate improvement over the PS3's 6-core running 3.2GHz. For the PC, online and video crowd, Sony could offer a 8-16GB system with SSD and possibly upgrade the CPU (overclocked or cooled, or additional cores to aid multitasking).

I think it advantage now it actually showing far more than it did at first,, especially in first part games, which have looked better for a while than Xbox first party games. Sadly for Sony through because they lack a dominate position developers developed for Xbox first.

In a business sense it did not offer Sony much of an advantage through, and the CELL processor was a disaster in business terms and probably cost Sony hundreds of millions of dollars.

I remember 7 years ago, ps2 was highly popular, in 2005 ps3 was unviled and game critics and media outlets laughed at the Wii and meh xbox360. Most people assumed the ps3 will cost 299.99 or 399.99. When sony announced the price of the ps3 in 2006 with the price tag of 599.99 for 60gb hd and 499.99 20gb hd, the whole entire casual gaming market fled from Sony and went to Nintendo witb its Wii and revolutionary gyroscope controller. Playstation was a popular household name. Sony must not beat nintendo or Microsoft to regain its dominance, sony must beat Apple since Apple and its iphone, ipad and itouch commands much of the casual gamer market. Even Ea games sales for console declined but what helped Ea was sales of ios platform games. Hardcore gamers dont move consoles only casual gamers do, Hardcore gamers are only a small segment of the gaming populace. Sony must capture the casual gamer market like what they done with ps1 and ps2.

I agree and disagree with the Japanese games thing here in the US. The PS2 had a TON of Japanese games released in the US, in fact, there were more Japanese titles on the shelves for the PS2 than outright US made games. I'm someone who can't stand Japanese games, especially jrpg's, but there is a niche crowd for them here in the US, and they are pretty loyal. They not only buy games, but collect them. And although that crowd has shrunk considerably over the years (that's why they don't even port them over for the PS3) they would be wise to take the advice and bring over as many as they can. Most of the games need nothing more than a good english dubbing and that's it... They should also cut the crap with the region lock and just release worldwide same day. The PS4 should also have the ability to change store locations like Amazon or Ebay and let you access stores from other countries if a game isn't released here, boom, you can buy it through Sony digitally from any country.
Finally they HAVE TO offer GIANT external hard drives, minimum, 1TB ... Do you know how much space a HD movie takes up?!? Make the HD a plug and play experience... no formating, no screws, no having save this, but not that. Have it so you plug it in, the PS4 does the rest and boom it holds everything. Come on Sony, you used to innovate with this shit. And speaking of innovating ... there are already a few wireless HDMI boxes on the market. I'm not sure how good they are, but for a company that has so many inventions under their belt, I would have expected this to be a Sony exclusive by now.

Sony's online service better than Xbox? Maybe if you can't afford $35 a year Xbox live Gold. I don't believe anything Sony says anymore.
I had a PS1 growing up and some of my friends got the PS2, but even that was back in 1999. I don't know anyone who actually got the PS3 even though, supposedly there were some good games on it I never bothered looking because I knew I'd never get a PS3 nor have the time to play it even if I did.

Things I'd like to see: capability to play games from older versions, including the PS1 and to play them WELL; 4 controllers, seriously 2 controllers was for the NES and the world has moved on; cost effective games...if you lower the price while maintaining quality game companies would sell more. Games were cheap when I was 18 and in my early 20s, nowadays I think long and hard before dropping sixty bux, and even then a long time after all the reviews have been out.

WHA?! I think I agree with others about the article being out of touch. What I see needed is; Overall improvements to their online service (speed), making it a platform for "apps" ala roku, better UI structure (xmb is no nonsense but I would say Dashboard feels a bit ore engaging) and making the thing easier to develop for.

When it comes down to it, hardware is great but it becomes moot without having good software on top .

They claimed it gave them an advantage, but it really didn't. At least not in any noticeable way. I remember all the bragging about how they were releasing the console a year after XBox and how it was twice as powerful and whatnot. End result is both are fairly even, with minor differences (PS3 tends to do a *little* better with shadows, XBOX has better framerates).

Not even Blizz wants WoW on Consoles. Those who suggest: "When is WoW getting Ported to console?" generally get the response: "We do not tolerate such language on the forums"

MMO's require a keyboard. The Marvel Universe MMO port was terrible at best. There's far too much to do in those to actually let it just sit on a pad that merely has 9 buttons and a d-pad to function, MMO's require more... They also require Add-on support which Sony wouldn't allow if it was the choice between success and bankruptcy.

What you sound like you want is a PC. Buy a PC or upgrade your graphics card with the money you'd toss at a console. I mean... if you want something that blurs the line between PC gaming and Console Gaming, then connect an Xbox controller to your PC via the USB, or link your PS3 controller to your bluetooth (or just use a PS2 to USB connection to connect your PS2 controller considering there's little to no difference between a dual-shock 3 and a dual-shock 2 except that a small group of titles use the six-axis feature.)

...PSN is slow as all hell man, wake up and realize that Xbox live is by far and away, without a doubt, and bar-none, the far Superior product.

The only issue with it is that you have to pay for it, and that's insane IMO.

As for the CD tray: I'd prefer a bloody tray, that's better than the wondering when, oh when, my little mechanical gripper arms are going to fail in the PS3. And they will fail - I'm just waiting for the day. Honestly when this PS3 fails on me, I'll be swapping it with something else other than a PS3 (I'm hoping, maybe, to pick up a refurbished gen 1 PS3.)

As for PS3 Vs Xbox: Sony HAD a better console, they did. They HAD - past tense. Since launch Microsoft actually listened to customers, worked to fix issues, replaced failing devices, offered credits for downtime and overall did everything a company SHOULD do when mistakes are made. The new Xbox's are offering far more features than the originals. The PS3 however has been stripped of feature after feature with each revision, and Sony has even gone as far as to REMOVE given features from existing devices.... After that little "Snatch" of theirs I'm worried what else I paid for they can take away without my knowledge or ANY reimbursement to customers.

So yeah, PSN better than Xbox Live? Right. Not a chance. I don't even own an Xbox and I know that much.

…PSN is slow as all hell man, wake up and realize that Xbox live is by far and away, without a doubt, and bar-none, the far Superior product.

The only issue with it is that you have to pay for it, and that’s insane IMO.

As for the CD tray: I’d prefer a bloody tray, that’s better than the wondering when, oh when, my little mechanical gripper arms are going to fail in the PS3. And they will fail – I’m just waiting for the day.
agreed. I bought the PS3 back when it came out. It was expensive because of all the features it boasted.

Fast forward to now and I'm wondering if Sony will release a patch to make the card reader on the front of my PS3 stop reading cards, or the two of my four USB ports stop functioning.... They've really stripped the poor thing down to it's core at this point and it is very ridiculous that that was their method of reducing costs... not moving the PS2 emulation from a chip to software, or actually doing any REAL R&D, no just take stuff out to make the console cheaper!

It's sad to see the PS3 brought down to what it is now.

Also what Sony REALLY needs to focus on is getting the PSN up to snuff.... You offer HD downloads and Games bought entirely on DLC, and then some how limit the download speed to an insanely low level. It's sad when it takes 10+ hrs to download a 2GB game Sony. Whatever data cap or server issues you're having, fix them before PS4 hits. I'm not the only one with this issue either, it's crazy.

This why I wonder whether Sony or Microsoft should play the longer game. Accept this year and the next is going to be tough and that no matter what they priced the console at, they are not going to shift many of them, especially with PS3 and Xbox 360 still have big releases schedules, so worry less about system price and focus on longevity on giving the system a longer shelve.

speculating but I wouldn't be entirely surprise if the next Grand theft Auto and some other titles pencilled in for PS3/360 suddenly became a PS4 or a 720 timed exclusive launched titles, only coming out on older system at a latter date.
