Intellectual property has value. When you pirate, you use intellectual property without paying. That’s stealing.
Material cost is absolutely irrelevant.

If pirates “do not cause material loss” no one should have to pay for games. Problem is, if no one pays, no one will pay talented people to produce games. You’d have nothing to pirate.

If anyone steals anything, including a $30 mouse, they are liable to go to prison. That’s reality.

Admit it Mariz, you’re just a pirate that wants stuff for free and you get upset when other people want to stop your freeloading theft.

Pirating is not stealing. You do not cause material loss to the person/company you steal from. They loose nothing but the imaginary money they think they lost when in fact you never even considered to give it to them.

Or maybe you wanted to check if the game has been ironed out of bugs and wanted to check it out before buying. In which case, if developers did good job, they get your money.

If a kid steals/teen/whoever steal a 30 dollar mouse from a store, do you fine him 1500? And that’s really stealing.

So what is a reasonable fine? They stole the game, simple as. The large fines are meant as a deterrent, if they were “reasonable” people would still take the risk and pirate the game.

And as for never buying from them because they fined criminals, that’s a bit ridiculous. CD Projekt are pioneers in the fight against piracy as they use no DRM and make sure that they encourage legitimate purchases with added extras in their releases and as such deserve support, not scorn.

Are you serious? Pirates are criminals and they should be punished. I hate DRM because it punishes honest gamers. Game prices plummet after a few months, you can even buy blockbusters for less than $20 once the hype comes down. There is no excuse to steal.

Chris, first of all you have absolutely no gaming cred now that you have admitted to not knowing about the game Witcher. I can’t comprehend why anyone would flaunt their ignorance like you just did.

Second of all, I came here from engadget hoping for less opinionated and better articles. Burns, your post is very opinionated and the writing sucks.

I gave slashgear a few weeks to judge the content. This article is the last straw. Guess I will be looking for a new gadget blog. Any recommendations?

it’s not a blockbuster, but it’s a well known game actually.

Also, i will now never buy anything from them. Had they charged reasonable fines, ok, but this is just ridiculous.

I hate all these lawsuits casting a wide net on a bunch of people innocent or not and then expecting the victims to prove their innocence. If my house was robbed, I don’t send everybody else on my block to jail until we figure out who actually robbed me. What the heck. And all those innocent folks have to go and find lawyers to defend themselves. Is someone going to pay those legal bills? Irresponsible lawsuits.

Fail…if you didn’t know much of anything about Witcher 2 prior to this you were definitely missing out and fairly misinformed. It was a fairly large release earlier this year. Additionally, the developers for it are some of the more consumer friendly developers out there, going so far as to remove all the DRM from the game within weeks of release.
