Pimp My Ride: iPad Edition

If you're buying a car in this day and age, you can easily get GPS and satellite navigation included on board, and if not, there are always third party options. But what about using one of those new fangled iPads to do those jobs plus act as a radio to boot? SoundMan Car Audio, a car installation service in Southern California, set out to mod an iPad into a car.

Their idea was somewhat different from past attempts: previously their mods have allowed you to remove the iPad, but this new proof-of-concept makes the new iPad totally unremovable from the dock. The logic is that the iPad is a "$700 radio" thanks to iTunes Match and iCloud, with the 4G LTE connection proving fast enough to handle realtime streaming.

Mounting the iPad provides several other benefits other than streaming music, like turn-by-turn navigation, not to mention the wealth of apps at your disposal. The large screen also makes it relatively easy to interact with while in the car. The iPad has also be made to work with Ford SYNC, which allows users to control music with voice commands.

Since this is just a proof-of-concept, there's no word on exactly what this will set you back if you want a similar setup in your own vehicle. In the meantime, check out the full video below to see the full modification from inception to install.
