I love pie charts. They can be very informative, but also misleading. I mean think about it, you can be convinced of just about anything as long as there are a series of pie charts to back it up.

I’m not saying that’s the case here, the Ken Pierce of Pixel Perfect Productions, who put these together obviously spent a lot of time compiling data to see just how well the new HD formats are doing. Essentially what he’s done is “looked at the biggest films of the last few years and calculated the percentages of those films, by studio grosses, that are available for release on each format.”
He looks at the highest grossing films of the last three years, as well as the top 100 grossing films of all time and analyzes what format each were released on. If that pie chart is anything to go off of, things aren’t looking good for the guys over at the HD-DVD camp.

Whoa that chart is the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen. The numbers are based on what a movie makes at the theater and that’s supposed to show that it’ll sell like hell in what ever format.

Like all these silly little forecasts this one sticks to the (apparent) rule: -
always avoid any mention of the numbers actually sold like the plague and just use percentages and ratios to describe what is happening.
Cos the truth of what is really happening is that in well over a year Blu-ray haven’t even sold 2 million discs yet and HD DVD has sold about 1.3 million discs to date.
……whereas the total movie DVD market was well over 750 million in the last year alone.
The truth is that ‘the war’ hasn’t even really got started yet.
In the USA around 35% of homes have HD TV (most being 720p/1080i) and in the UK it’s 10% and in western Europe it’s little less than that.
This ‘war’ has years to run yet.

This is the most asinine use of a pie chart I’ve seen in a long time. Who’s behind it Homer Simpson?
Nice try Sony.
With this prefaced by “I love pie charts. They can be very informative, but also misleading.”
why would you ever post this? This nothing if not misleading.
What I don’t get is where either side think they have the number to predict this. The sales of both formats together last month are behind VHS. Is VHS making a comeback? No.
It’s embarrassing for Sony to talk about disk sales, with 1.5 million players (counting ps3) sold HD is nipping at their heals with only 300,000 dedicated players sold. The PS3 is keeping Blu-ray on life support. Without PS3 (which is being sacrificed as a game machine to promote Blu-ray) this format war would be over. Hell there would not be a format war for except for Sony embarking to monopolize the market. Look it up if you doubt it, Sony is the one who refused to work with the DVD forum and refused to negotiate on a new standard. This is greed pure and simple.
+3The war is just heating up. Set back and enjoy the ride. This holiday season will be first real salvo.

HD DVD player Amazon sales rank = #200
Blu-Ray player Amazon sales rank = #820
HD DVD is far from dead. Walk up to a group at a party and blurt out “HD DVD” and everyone will at least have some idea of what you’re talking about. If you say “Bly-Ray”, 90% will think you just came from the zoo.

you fanboys read the article carefully it says the top grossing movies of last 3 years and top 100 movies of all time that can be RELEASED on any of the formats 52% exclusive to BD and 10% to HD-DUD and 37% are warner or paramount. Stupid noobs this only means that if they released the top grossing movies BluRay will have 89% of the titles while HD-DVD will have 47%. Stupid fanboys write something related to the article not when you go to a stupid party with junkies.
