Phones4U won't issue iPhone 6 preorder refunds

When Phones4U shuttered their doors just ahead of the iPhone 6 launch, the immediate concern was "what about those iPhone 6 pre-orders?" Initially, the defunct retailer said they'd refund any down payments placed for the newest Apple handset. Now they're telling former customers to fight them to get their money back.

In a bulk email sent to those who preordered an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus, Phones4U told them no refunds would be issued. Instead of doing the right thing, Phones4U is insisting that those who put any money down for an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus dispute the charge with their credit card company.

Perhaps just as insulting as the emailed middle-finger is the way it was sent. Rather than send an email to themselves and BCC those affected — like anyone who sends bulk emails knows to do — Phones4U made all emails visible. That's not only inconsiderate with regard to privacy, it opens everyone up to hateful and/or snarky 'reply all' emails they may not be interested in getting.

Phones4U attempted to rescind the email, but weren't clear as to why that was. One respondent asked if they were trying to reel it back in because of a violation to the Data Protection act of 1998, which would serve as a reason NOT to make emails public information. Hopefuls question if the refund information included was simply incorrect, but it's not.

PricewaterhouseCoopers is administrating Phones4U's bankruptcy and closing. Embedded on their site is note that no refunds or promised free gifts with a purchase will be issued. They encourage everyone to make a claim with the administrators (them), but that's likely a bigger kluge than arguing your case to the credit card company.
