Yes, of course "just because it is a commercial project by a for-profit company, doesn't mean it can't be creative" is obvious and should go without saying, but apparently not on the Internet, where someone will pounce on the opportunity to state the obvious, and often do so in a way that suggests that it was not obvious. So it goes! Anyway, so what you're saying is that it doesn't matter if a project is commercial or not as long as it meets the "creative" requirement, which is worded broadly. Got it! Thanks :)

Just because it is a commercial project by a for-profit company, doesn't mean it can't be creative. Look at the previous record holder, Double Fine Productions, trying to crowdsource the funding for an old-school adventure game. That's still a commercial product by a for-profit company.

The creativity in this product is that it is an open smartwatch platform. I can download the SDK and write a new program so that it can meet my needs; noticeably different from most (if not all) of the other smartwatch options presently available.

And, it's not as though the funding isn't being fairly generated. Each tier earns you at least one watch below what the MSRP will be

Does the Pebble Kickstarter really meet Kickstarter's "Funding for creative projects only" requirement? Because it sure looks like a commercial project by a for-profit company.
