What is better or more compelling than W8 for all of the new portable hardware? That is what is was designed for and nothing equals it.

And don’t forget the fact that all the new hardware that W8 is really made for like touch screens and all the hybrids and convertibles were not available for the holiday season when W8 was. They are only just now starting to trickle into the market.

Change always brings these kinds of results. Not to mention the iPad constantly eating away at laptop sales. If you ask me, companies like Microsoft and Apple are all going towards a gesture based GUI system like iOS, Android, and Windows 8/rt. The difference is Apple is introducing iOS funtionality to OSX slowly and letting people adapt to them, essentially hand holding. MS on the other hand is shoving it in our faces full force. But in the end I think the reason MS is going all in so to speak is they really don’t have any other choice. they are so far behind the curve with mobile its laughable. And mobile is eating Desktop/Laptop’s lunch which other than Enterprise is Microsoft’s bread and butter.

I hope not. Those Hybrid Ultrabooks are as much a piece of garbage as the rest of the plastic Windows PC’s. The problem is that OEMs and Microsoft have place the value of their product line to be abysmally low and people expect them to continue to pump out low priced garbage now. I hope Microsoft succeeds otherwise Apple will have a complete monopoly (which I’d hate, even though I’m running all Apple gear now after being a PC guy since I could walk)

OS X and Apple isn’t a “walled garden” any more than Windows is Rob. They aren’t in control of your data at all – what does that even mean? Stop spreading FUD. The rest of your post is true concerning Linux and Windows 8 being the cause of poor PC sales – plus the fact that consumers don’t need to update their PC’s every year, combined with more people using iPads for general daily computing usage/consumption.

If they weren’t forcing Win8 down everyone throats it sales wouldn’t have been so bad. Really, PC is a keyboard affair, not touch screen. PC sales is sign no one wants darn software in the first place and trying hold out for better one. The source of the problems with PC is simple, Win is only one of two operating systems you can buy over the counter that user friendly. Linux software is still not ready for non-computer person to play with. Apply is walled garden, where corporation is control of your content.
Portable devices are taking control for leading edge of computing now, but its not really good tool to substitue with PC. Frankly, you don’t need state-of-the-art PC to run on internet. Thats likely why with Win8′s changes there no strong PC sales.

Computing is evolving. Plain and simple. There is nothing compelling about new Windows 8 and its accompanying hardware. Everyone wants to add smartphones and tablets to their media consumption experience and is willing to forgo upgrading their existing PCs for an enhanced EXISTING experience. Why replace the dining room table instead of getting a pool table?

I really hope this isn’t the beginning of the decline of PC. I hope this is just a thing with the economy.

Windows 8 though, I can understand the low sales. That OS looks like ****. I’ll wait for Windows 9.

but these agencies didn’t count the Windows 8 tablets which is actual Intel CPU PC or upgrade license to Windows 8, while 2011 it was the cheap Netbook that was replaced by tablet

2013 Hybrid Ultrabooks will replace many tablets, CES 2013 is the proof

Interesting, but a couple of points you haven’t adressed.

1) Apple’s Mac sales in the US are down. This indicates a softening of the PC market as a whole since this decrease cannot be attributed to Windows 8.

2) Given growth in PC sales was largely due to netbook sales over 2008 to 2011, if we strip out sales that are accounted for by tablets as an alternative to netbooks?

Windows 8 was never going to set the world on fire and tablets and phones have definitely replaced them as the secondary computer and ‘shiny’ gift but rather than blame the whole thing on W8 you should be asking questions like why Mac sales failed to grow too.

I bet it goes down next year too. I think those days are well and truly gone. Tablets and smart TVs will become the norm. In two years, tablet screens will get larger and the tablet will be lighter, have huge power and can run any programs you like.
