Permissions smirmissions.. nearly every app calls for the same intrusive set.. want send a Txt from the app.. permissions.. special circumstances when a call comes in... Permissions... Save to camera roll... Etc..

I'm pretty sure there isn't a "hey, I'm malware, cool?" Permission.

Modded roms are the opposite of security. It's too easy for popular downloads like cyanogen to be keyword spammed with fake/infected downloads and torrents.

Tim : you a-hole, how dare you produce an app that proves the app store has security issues?
Dave : we just figured if that app store allows it then it must be o.k with Apple.
Tim : just because we think it's o.k for US not to give a damn about our customers doesen't mean it's o.k for YOU not to give a damn about our customers.

It was noted however that Android apps that had internet permission had similar data access issues (i.e. being able to read large amounts of "private" data). Not saying Apple is better than Google in this regard, just that both platforms suffer the same problem.

"
The system is still more secure than Android’s “let anything in and then weed out the malware” approach"

Yes, this is true. However, unlike hand-holding iOS, Android gives users the opportunity to review the permissions required by an application before installing. If an app takes something it shouldn't, it's most likely because the user said it could.

If you run a custom ROM like CyanogenMod, you can even revoke app permissions. There are also apps in the market like LTE Privacy Guard that lets you prevent apps from acquiring certain permissions while also maintaining the stability of the app. So, a little journalistic integrity please...
