Is it true?  There’s a rumor flying around the web regarding the Palm Pre’s price – $399 for a Sprint 2-year contract.  We must stress that has not been confirmed.  That said, what do you think about this price point?

399

Im a huge palm fan.. I’ve taken years of abuse from friends and family who jumped ship way long ago and purchased iphones , crackberries and the like.

I myself was ready to jump ship to a blackberry storm pretty soon as I dont even use the data plan on my treo phone since the browser and screen are horrible. Now i realize that this browser was never really usefull to begin with.

But 399 dollars WITH a 2 year contract is too steep. I purchased my treo with a 2 year contract and paid maybe 200 out of pocket. I could maybe see $299. But for $399 i can wait a few months till the price drops anyways. Just like the Iphone. I dont know why palm would get everyone all excited and then make the price point exorbitant. Palm Fans are not 16 year old girls waiting outside a store to get their iphone for 600 dollars.

Besides, if we’ve waited forever already for this thing, we can wait a few more months.

    LC,
So your a huge palm fan. What about a normal-sized palm? Would that work? Seriously, what is it about you and your ilk (and you know who you are) that can turn ANYTHING into a slam against Apple? We are just talking about preferences here. Are your lives THAT devoid of interest that your obsession with anything Apple becomes an alternate reality? If you prefer huge palms, that’s OK with the rest of us. I think you are jealous of those 16 year old girls with their iPhones.

    About Wayne’s reply to you.

I think that anything that makes people so very fragile and sensitive that they abuse others online cannot be good for them. Perhaps there’s something bad in them-there Apples?

If they price this phone at 399 Sprint will be shooting themselves in the foot, yet again. The I-phone is 199 and will probably drop some more after their next update. So why price a potential competing phone so unreasonably high? Palm needs a home run and they may have it but it won’t happen if the potential buyers are kept at bay by a ridiculously high price.

$399 is absurd with a contract. $249 is the max price with a contract that I would pay. Nothing with Sprint is worth more than that cause you still have shotty coverage not matter what.

First of all, the iPhone is not $200. Yes, you can pick one up for that price but only if you are a new subscriber and only if you select a $30/month data plan that does not include anything other than data. If you were to pick one up out of contract, you’d be looking oat over $700. Look it up.

I would never take away anything from the success of the iPhone. It’s a great device that works really well. The folks over at Apple did a great job with the phone and I continue to be impressed by what it can do.

That said, when price is the issue, you are getting raped by AT&T. Their coverage area is a fraction of that of Sprint and they charge extra as compared to Sprint. Unfortunately for those who aren’t ready to jailbreak their iPhone, they are stuck with AT&T. It wouldn’t be so bad if they were more reasonable in price.

I should note that even if one were to jailbreak the iPhone, it would not work with Sprint as it’s a GSM only phone.
