This week the folks at Microsoft have sent out the Release to Manufacturing version of their newest operating system Windows 8 to developers around the world. This version of Windows is the final version of the software before it's released formally to the public, and developers working on applications that will be compatible with the operating system have access to the download this afternoon. The final release of the software to the public will take place on October 26th.

Google seems to have taken the litigious lessons it's learned from Android to heart, because the company is grabbing as many patents related to the new Project Glass as it can. The latest batch of six patents covers everything from helping the hearing impaired with visual cues to sensors designed to interpret the electrical pulses from the skin on a user's nose. None of them are officially associated with Project Glass, but the patent artwork speaks for itself.

Microsoft has filed a patent application that has a very cool idea that would make for an interesting smartphone. The patent outlines a new dual sided display system for smartphones. In some of the graphics with the patent application, it shows the ability to have a clock on the outside and what appears to be the ability to show messaging indicators along the front edge as well.

The first batch of those little boards sold out quickly and then a production delay prevented other deliveries to people wanting to get hands on one. However, the company was hit with a bit of a setback last week after two suppliers decided not to distribute the board.

It looks like there may soon be another contender in the 7-inch tablet market here in the states. The ZTE Smart Tab 7 Android tablet has just passed through the FCC, signaling an imminent launch. However, it was first unveiled during IFA 2011 as a slate branded for Vodafone, so it's not clear whether it would also be distributed here rebranded under a major carrier.
