Retina iPad mini update coming quick says analyst, chip boost in 2014

Retina iPad mini update coming quick says analyst, chip boost in 2014

It would appear that the analysts at NPD DisplaySearch have run the numbers and decided that the iPad mini with full retina-quality display is well on its way. They've made it clear in their most recent report that the iPad mini's first big update will be appearing in the third quarter of 2013, if all goes well, with another update soon after. The second update, says NPD, will include not only a higher-definition display than the first edition - it'll have a boosted mobile processor under the hood, as well.

Microsoft reportedly to produce 7.5 inch tablet

Back on April 11, we heard rumor that Microsoft is working on a 7-inch Surface tablet, with the information being provided to The Wall Street Journal by unnamed sources. That rumor has surfaced again, this time with NPD DisplaySearch telling the folks over at CNET that Microsoft will produce a 7.5-inch tablet of some sort, and that unlike the late-2013 date supplied by the original sources, the tablet won't be available until 2014.

Why the World Needs A Universal Game Console

Why the World Needs A Universal Game Console

The recent announcement of NPD’s game console numbers had me thinking about the industry and what it has become. Each month, we examine those figures to see where the market stands and fans of all three major consoles take up arms to explain why their product is best.

But all of that debate and all of the talk about the success or failure of devices like the Wii U make me question what the future looks like. We’re expected to see more game consoles hit the marketplace in the next year or so, and Steam is also planning to enter the fray. Add that to OUYA and the possibility of Apple gaming, and it becomes clear that the console market will only grow in the coming years.

The Redmond-based company sold 281,000 consoles last month, with gamers spending a combined total of $338 million on Xbox consoles, games, and accessories in January alone.

Nintendo Wii U continues with lackluster sales

Nintendo Wii U continues with lackluster sales

The latest numbers are in from NPD Group for January of 2013 looking at the United States video game industry. The caveat with the numbers for January is that the month corresponded with the National Retail Federation leap week. I had never heard of that before, but basically it means the National Retail Federation adds an additional week to the month of January 2013 as far as sales numbers are concerned while January 2012 only had four weeks.
