Nikola Tesla Museum crowd-funded project gets Elon Musk bump

This week Matthew Inman from the illustrated blog and comic The Oatmeal initiated a funding project which would help pay for the public purchase of Nikola Tesla's original laboratory site for use as the first USA-located Tesla museum. In Inman's request (which of course took the form of an illustrated comic-like plea), he suggested that the Tesla auto company donate to the cause. The auto company is owned by none other than Elon Musk, who the folks at Jolopnik got in contact with, who agreed just this morning to donate online.

Humans on Mars in 12 years says Elon Musk

Right after the folks at NASA successfully landed their Curiosity rover on the red planet, entrepeneur and real-life Tony Stark made it clear that he'll be there between 12 and 15 years from now. "We know it's possible to get there," he said, "You would be moving to Mars, so a round trip ticket, it has to be no more than half a million dollars, so roughly, a middle-class house in California, and at this point, I would say, I know it's possible." He let it be known via Nightline that he was confident "at this point" that it could be done, that people would be living on Mars sometime in the future, and that it's our "life raft" for the future of the species.

This event makes the Dragon spacecraft a holder of two fantastic space-related records, the other being that it was the first comercially-built and operated spacecraft to be recovered successfully from orbit. SpaceX is at the head of these feats, with CEO Elon Musk greeting the pod as it splashed down in the Pacific Ocean earlier today: "welcome home baby."

Hyperloop may be ten years out, team says

When elon Musk cooly dropped the Hyperloop on us all, the idea was as forehead-slapping simple as it was futuristic. For Californians, the reality of an uber-quick Los Angeles to San Francisco transit system has long been discussed, but eludes the public at large. Though not without its doubters, the Hyperloop was a pretty bright concept, and one we’d all like to have. That’s kind of the new thinking around the Hyperloop, as the team attempting to build it is aiming to have it ready in ten years, and criss-crossing the nation.

Jeff Bezos envisions millions living, working in space

Space is a hot topic, and more than a few are anticipating our future on distant planets. Elon Musk has extensively commented on that future, and his SpaceX is putting in quite a bit of effort to help usher it in. Also dreaming of space is Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, who envisions millions of people one day living and working in space, something he recently discussed at the latest Ignition conference. BMW has 670HP plans for ubiquitous plug-in hybrids

BMW will distill the electric hybrid drive offered in its i8 eco-supercar and unusual i3 city car for its mainstream models, with the German company revealing plans to offer plug-in hybrid versions of every car. Kicking off with a 3 Series plug-in hybrid prototype set to be shown off in Miramas, France, and then spreading across the rest of the marque's line-up over the long term, the technology will see a battery-powered electric drivetrain paired with a frugal gas engine, the latter used as a range extender. However, BMW is also promising less time with that extender active.
