Atari has announced a new video game that will hit the PC via Steam this spring. The game is called Minimum and one glance at it will remind many of Minecraft. The game has blocky graphics and focuses heavily on crafting. Atari says that minimum is a fast paced, session-based combat game pitting five teams against each other.
LEGO is exploring 3D printing as a potential way for fans to produce their own custom bricks, as a way to stave off all-virtual world building games like Minecraft. The plastic brick company - which has already worked with Google on a virtual LEGO game playable in the Chrome browser - describes its attitude toward 3D printing as one of trying to convert it into "an opportunity for us," CMO Mads Nipper suggests.
If the first thing that crosses your mind is, "How can a movie be made from Minecraft?", take note that many asked the same thing about a LEGO movie. Warner Bros. has recently acquired the rights for Minecraft from its developer Mojang AB, and has tapped The LEGO Movie producer Roy Lee to produce the next block-centric (hopeful) cinematic hit.
Minecraft creator Markus Persson this weekend indicated that the game will not be available on Wii U anytime soon. He cited a heavy workload on existing projects as the reason for the lack of a forthcoming Wii U incarnation. He did not dismiss the idea altogether for the long term, however.
One of the strangest break-out hits of our current generation of multi-platform games is Minecraft, a pixelated game that's headed to the PlayStation 3 this month. While the original Xbox 360 version was released all the way back in May of 2012, this 2013 PlayStation 3 release will be exactly the same, or as similar as the developers at Mojang could make it. This December 17th release also heads off the push to both the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita which will be occurring inside 2014.
This week the folks a Mojang have announced a collaboration of epic scale - the first Xbox 360 downloadable update, utilizing the Mass Effect gaming environment for a fully-boxy adventure. This update is called Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition Mass Effect Mash-Up. This game works in collaboration with Microsoft Studios, Xbox Live Arcade, and 4J Studios - and the full details of the game are not yet out on the block. What you will be able to see is a set of cinematic effects not necessarily representative of the actual final bit of gameplay - we'll see that soon enough.
As the multi-platform gaming title Minecraft continues to expand in popularity with web browser, mobile, and console-based block-building action, today Sony announced the continuation of the title for PlayStation 4. This game will not be entirely exclusive to the console, coming in a Minecraft: Xbox One Edition from Mojang Studios with the launch of the Xbox One this holiday season, but it will have unique content. As it is with the developed-in-part-with-Microsoft Minecraft for Xbox One, so too shall the Sony-aimed Minecraft, ready for release by the time the console is out in stores: November 15th, 2013.
Markus "Notch" Persson's plans for a space simulator called 0x10c are no more. The Minecraft creator revealed he no longer intends to pursue the space-themed title under his game development studio, Mojang, during a Team Fortress 2 livestream on Reddit, stating there "are no future aspirations for 0x10c."
