Qualcomm expands Snapdragon S4 line

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 is certainly proving to be popular, and has now made the jump to televisions, tablets, and Windows 8 PCs in addition to smartphones. We’re used to seeing the dual-core 1.5Ghz chip in the this year’s range of high-end phones, but Qualcomm will be extending the line to include additional dual-core variants plus quad-core chips.

Galaxy S III LTE comes to Canada with Snapdragon inside

It's a whole new ballgame up above the USA as Canadian carriers across the board announce their release of the Samsung Galaxy S III complete with a Qualcomm processor, LTE speed, and 2GB of RAM. This variation of the GALAXY S III will have options for either 16GB or 32GB of internal storage while two variations on those models will exist with either 4G LTE or HSPA+ 42 data connections. This device will still essentially be the same international Samsung Galaxy S III we reviewed this past week by all outward and surface appearances, but the guts make this a whole different beast!

Qualcomm provides developers with Snapdragon Windows 8 test machines

Qualcomm provides developers with Snapdragon Windows 8 test machines

Microsoft has re-ignited the fervor behind its new ARM version of Windows 8 at Mobile World Congress today, and Qualcomm wants developers to know that it's behind them all the way. The chip manufacturer has announced that it will provide custom-made Snapdragon developer devices specifically for working on Windows 8 ARM. The hardware will be provided specifically with the intention of testing and optimizing new ARM-based Windows software, which will be quite a challenge as developers contend with new code and chip standards.

Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 (Krait) gets early benchmarks

Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 (Krait) gets early benchmarks

The newest Snapdragon processor is bringing its A-game to the tablet with the Mobile Development Platform smartphone MDP8660, and the benchmarks are in. This device represents the first hardware preview of the S4 processor made by Qualcomm and is in full working order in a reference platform design not unlike the other development devices we've seen from Qualcomm in the past. What we're looking at here mostly is the processor itself, PCmag comparing it to the NVIDIA Tegra 3 and the TI OMAP 4, Anandtech comparing it to the previous model Qualcomm MDP with a dual-core Scorpion processor instead.

Snapdragon S4 tests show Qualcomm pushing boundaries

Snapdragon S4 tests show Qualcomm pushing boundaries

Qualcomm's Snapdragon S4 processor has been put through its benchmarking paces, with the 1.5GHz dual-core "Krait" MSM8960 proving capable of indecently slick Android performance. The new chipset delivered more than twice the CPU grunt of any currently-shipping chipset in some tests, and while AnandTech's benchmarking is done on a Qualcomm developer device, rather than commercial hardware, conclusions like "this is the absolute smoothest we've ever seen Ice Cream Sandwich run" certainly leave us wanting more.
