Next-gen Siri will rely on open source back-end

Next-gen Siri will rely on open source back-end

When Apple launched ResearchKit, the platform was open source, allowing anyone to contribute or develop for ResearchKit. The snarky quip was that Apple finally figured out what open source was. It looks like Apple wasn’t done with open source; they’ve apparently based the new Siri engine on an open source platform known as Mesos. It’s the same platform used by other major tech companies like Airbnb and Twitter, and Mesos says Siri will be one of the largest Mesos clusters.

HTC One M9 Review – Gambling on Quality

HTC One M9 Review – Gambling on Quality

What does it take to create a smartphone design classic? For the HTC One M9, the answer is relentless refinement, improving what worked in its metal-bodied predecessors rather than chasing the latest trends. The smartphone spec arms-race is relentless, however, notable as much for its hyperbole as the minimal attention span of would-be buyers in carrier stores. If you can’t make your case in seconds, you’re going to lose the sale. Amid fierce competition, HTC doesn’t exactly have the greatest track record of playing up its strengths and capitalizing on its advantages. Has that changed in the One M9?

Echo’s PowerSound speaker boasts 32 hours of playback

Echo’s PowerSound speaker boasts 32 hours of playback

Portable speakers have gone wireless, and that's a good thing -- you're now able to play tunes from your phone or tablet over Bluetooth, no cable tethers to be found. The downside of battery life still remains, however, and when the internal battery dies, so does the party. Enter Echo's PowerSound speaker, which has a giant battery and boasts 32 hours of playback time on a single charge -- something that'll take you through an entire weekend of camping and music listening, for example. It also doubles as a power bank.

Divoom Bluetune Bean speaker includes selfie button

Portable speakers are old news at this point. It is not hard to find a little Bluetooth offering to complement your on-the-go lifestyle, and so another announcement elicits little more than a yawn. What's a company to do? Try to make its product unique by including something you wouldn't ordinarily expect to find on your speaker -- in Divoom's case, that is a shutter button for taking selfies. Yes, you can now take a selfie using a speaker. What a world.

Logitech ConferenceCam Connect puts video chat in stick

Logitech ConferenceCam Connect puts video chat in stick

There's clearly a trend toward slightly-ominous slender cylinders in tech: first Amazon's Echo, and now Logitech has put the form-factor to use as a portable Full HD video conferencing gadget. The Logitech ConferenceCam Connect may at first glance look like a fancy sippy-cup for commuters to tote their coffee around in, but it's actually a fancy 1080p camera with ZEISS optics and integrated wireless, capable of turning a smartphone or tablet into an impromptu display, and linking roving employees into their company's video conferencing systems.

Lumia 1030 leaks: bigger body, 50-megapixel camera

There's nothing like a Lumia to get your brain excited about massive smartphone-based camera technology. This morning we're getting a look at the successor to the Lumia 1020. Nokia's first Windows Phone with a massive camera at its back, the Nokia Lumia 1020 was originally released with a 41-megapixel sensor. This new Lumia 1030 is said to run with a 50-megapixel sensor, taking the biggest photos any smartphone will have taken yet. By a large margin. And only really beating Nokia's previous release - now made by the same crew, but owned by Microsoft instead.

Ohm Bluetooth Speaker doubles as wireless charger

Ohm Bluetooth Speaker doubles as wireless charger

Joining its recent slew of new products comes a new audio device from Quirky, the Ohm Bluetooth Speaker. The unit won't be shipping until December 10, but interested parties can pre-order it now from the company's website for $169.99 USD. As far as speakers go, the Ohm isn't terribly notable -- what sets it apart is the base, which includes a wireless charger to power up any device that supports Qi charging units. There's a USB cable to join it, something expected considering many devices still don't support wireless charging, as well as an integrated battery for portable use.

Burg 12 standalone smartwatch launches at Walmart

A new standalone smartwatch called the Burg 12 has quietly launched at Walmart, bringing those interested in the technology a relatively low-priced option with an interface that, in one iteration at least, looks like a miniature Simon Says toy. The smartwatch, though standalone in nature, can be connected to an Android or iOS smartphone, and it appears to run its own proprietary software, which isn't detailed. Hermen van den Burg, a Dutch designer, is behind the design, hence its name.
