Apple Patent Seeks to do Away with Fingerprints

Take a look at the Fingerprint Portal here on SlashGear and you'll see quite plainly that when we review devices, the subject comes up often, especially when it comes to displays. Apple knows this, and with their new FCC filed plans they appear to be seeking to do away with them. Apple here is using an oleophobic coating to keep fingerprints out of mobile world, a direct liquid application called Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) and should it work the way they're describing it AND should it make its way to the real world, we may soon have a tougher time judging who has held a phone based on prints alone.

Years ago I had a notebook that used a fingerprint scanner to log me into the machine rather than having to type. The problem was that the swipe never grabbed the fingerprint the first time out and I always ended up having to swipe repeatedly until I gave up and typed my password. Fingerprint scanners have come a long way since those early offerings and one of the more interesting new fingerprint scanners is the HS100-10.

I used to have a Dell notebook that had a fingerprint scanner on it. I really liked the idea of being able to login by swiping my finger rather than typing a password. In reality, the sensor was so inaccurate that it took multiple swipes before it would recognize my fingerprint so I never used it. AuthenTec has a new fingerprint sensor aimed a notebooks and peripherals that promises to be accurate.

Archos' new PMP range has been long anticipated, and the first hands-on reports are already coming in.  GenerationMP3 spent some time with both the 4.8-inch Archos 5 and the 7-inch Archos 7, and despite the casings being real fingerprint magnets they've come away impressed.  Archos have apparently switched the audio processing chip and are claiming far better sound quality; they've also included both the Flash-compatible Opera browser and the WebTV & Radio plugin, which on previous models were paid options.
